My Hoover really sucks !! And I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
Friends have brought their vacs over to compare to my Hoover, and many of them returned theirs for one.

Mine is a 2000 model with the dirt finder option and can't say what the new ones are like, but I haven't heard of any complaints the ones my friends got.

I've had a Miele canister for at least 15 years with zero issues (other than the bags are proprietary and relatively expensive). Solid as a rock and 2 additional filters besides the bag. I would buy another in an instant, but this one will probably last me the remainder of my life 😸.

Down under. You'd think the dust would fall out of our floor. But no, we use vacuums too. I had a Tellus, sometimes known as a Nilfisk, it's only 700 watts motor and I wanted it at my holiday house, off grid, I have a 1000 watt generator. I saw a documentary about the Miele history, they seemed to have a good approach to design and quality so I bought one. Recommend it. Best wishes.

We have a SEBO. We found it much to be much quieter than the DYSON at the time. Usually get two or three fills out of each bag. It's lasted us quite a while, probably close on 15 years now. SEBO (U.K.) is just down the road to me and I had the thing fully serviced about two years back for a very reasonable sum. Only trouble I had was when the cable split on the handle, it can be shortened and refixed but I found it to be a bit of a pain.

Highly recommended despite that little foible though.

I don't know if you can get it in America, but the cordless Gtech AirRam Mark 2 is extraordinary. Far better than any corded vacuum we have owned. There is also a handheld version which is ideal for the stairs and car.

Here is the website:

I am looking for a new vacuum cleaner. I have had 2 Dyson's. Not worth the money (in my honest opinion), Elextrolux, Bissell, Hoover. I am tired of throwing my money away on disposable vacuum's. Everyone tells me that canister's are better than upright's for picking up dirt.
I went in to a local Sew & Vac shop in Rhode Island. The woman was trying to be helpful, but her 3 year old son spent the entire time knocking over vacuum's and boxes of filters. He was a terror and I couldn't focus on what she was saying. I wish I had my camera to take a before and after shot of the sales floor. It looked like Hurricane Irma and Jose hit the showroom.

I got two of these from Amazon, one upstairs and one down. I think they're great. They often go on sale in the $80 range. No bags, good suction, easy to take apart and clean.

My wife is really hard on sweepers. First thing every morning does our two story house. Been through several Sears uprights and a few canisters.
currently using a Shark Upright for the upstairs and loves it, bought it at Wallmart. No bags to empty or buy.

My brothers and sisters pooled our experiences with other brands, along with research, product support, parts availability, etc. We came up with Miele canisters. I've had mine for 6 years, and dropped the floor wand one, which broke the plastic lock holding it to the hose. The part is available, but it works just fine as is. Other than that, no problems, and it can suck a golf ball through a garden hose, so to speak. Suction power was always a problem with other brands I tried, but not Miele.

Ditto. We replaced a 15 year-old Sears canister with a Miele canister about 6 years ago. Wish we had done it sooner. You get what you pay for, right? Especially if you want to keep it awhile.

Thanks everyone! Miele is looking like the vacuum I may get. Is there a model number that you would recommend?

I've had a Miele Red Star canister for about 10 years. While it offers good performance, both plastic hinge pegs for the top cover both broke off and the cord retract mechanism broke. Prior to that, I had a 1974 Electrolux that still works, to this day although its getting tired. Although I like canister vacuum cleaners, I just purchased a Shark (has better reviews than Dyson) and I have to admit it's a very good machine. Although an upright, you can easily detach and carry the motor/soil canister and use it like a canister although the vacuum head is a little larger than my Miele or Electrolux. Of the three, the Electrolux is the best but when I went to buy a new one, it's almost entirely plastic and I'd say Electrolux has cheaped out perhaps to boost their short term profits as many manufacturers seem to have done, now a days.

I know Electrolux is pricy but with the power nozzle it can't be beat I have had mine for over 20 years

My Oreck has been around for over 20 years and continues to do a great job. My neighbor's fancy vac just breathed its last so she is borrowing mine. Friends tell me that they replaced the Dyson with a Shark and like it.

But you'd still need a vacuum to clean the ceiling.

I have had to buy only two vacuum cleaners in the last 33years. Both were Kenmore canisters. Now I know they "don't make things like they used to", but just saying, two in 33 years is pretty good.
