I am looking for a new vacuum cleaner. I have had 2 Dyson's. Not worth the money (in my honest opinion), Elextrolux, Bissell, Hoover. I am tired of throwing my money away on disposable vacuum's. Everyone tells me that canister's are better than upright's for picking up dirt.
I went in to a local Sew & Vac shop in Rhode Island. The woman was trying to be helpful, but her 3 year old son spent the entire time knocking over vacuum's and boxes of filters. He was a terror and I couldn't focus on what she was saying. I wish I had my camera to take a before and after shot of the sales floor. It looked like Hurricane Irma and Jose hit the showroom.

I agree with you on Dyson. We have owned two high end models and they play havoc with area rugs. They also are too heavy, and too complicated once you have to get beyond actually vacuuming. We finally bought a Miele canister which is a lightweight compared to those Dysons. There have been no problems for three years now. It just works!

Kids gave us an iLife robotic vacuum a couple of years ago. It works a couple of times a week at our house. No bags. Clean the filter and dump the junk it picks up, and its ready to go. Gets under the bed and chairs. Best of all, when the battery runs low, it goes back to the charging station on it's own. Quite the tool.

From about six vacuum cleaners i own, most of them are still in service, but I ended up liking Shark - high end model (three way Rotator about $400 with a caddy because it is heavy so you don't have to carry it) and with a number of useful attachments. Advantage of these modern vacuums is a washable filter (no bags) Hoover is giving me headaches and a nice, lightweight Oreck uses awkward paper bags. H2O is an interesting design concept to trap the dirt in a water tank. Smaller Sharks are a little bit heavy for their size but working all right. If you have lots of dirt and large rooms, the Shark three way Rotator is probably the champion.

There is only one vacuum cleaner that I would ever consider: Rainbow. We have had two of these in our lifetime and they are a true gem. Expensive, but worth every penny because they do not shoot dirty air back out into the room. There is no filter bag that air has to pass through. The vacuum uses water as its filter to trap the dirt and it is amazing to see the dirt that you have in your house after you clean with one of these.
