I'm not sure what to do with it. Some of my options are: 1) just keep it as a spare and use only if necessary . . . 2) put my 18-270 lens on it and use it as my in golf bag, under car seat, hunting/fishing, etc camera . . . 3) put my 11-16 lens or 40mm macro on it and set it up for just taking landscapes or macros . . . 4) try and sell it . . . What do you recommend? The D5500 is a really nice camera, but I just don't see myself having much use for it anymore . . .

ebay. You'll have your money in a week.

Turn it into an Infrared. Get a conversion.
That's a great idea. I love infrared and you shoot when it's sunny mid day. Look at lifepixel.com and Kolarivision.com for inspiration.

Hi,
I too have a D500 and also still have my D5100. It has a very good 'Auto mode' - which with the original lens is great to give my grandkids to use when I take them out with me. At such time as they want to do more, the D5100 has all the normal DSLR capability.
I still have my Canon 5D in great condition saved as a backup. Having the AEB feature and acquiring a Manfrotto 30' tripod, I use it with a backup wide angle lens for aerial shots of real estate, concerts, weddings and events.
Many people who own drones and advertise for weddings and events are breaking the law. You cannot fly drones over and around people. With the industrial tripod I get the same shot with HDR color detail, and it works great in heavily wooded settings.
Hand it down to a young person who can't afford a camera but has an interest in photography or sell it and put the money towards a Sony a6000 for your golf backup camera. That's what I did with my D5100. My son took the D5100 on a trip to Peru and enjoyed using it. My wife likes the a6000 which I take to job sites from time to time. Easy to travel with.

First of all my recommendation is to keep it. I use two camera's myself all the time. One is your D500 with a Nikon 200-500 F5.6 lens and my other camera is a Sony A77II with a Sony 18-250 mm lens attached. The Sony is on a loop that attaches to my belt via a 1/4 20 ball screw. I carry my D500 in my hands and the Sony attached to my belt. When I am out shooting birds in one of 10 local wildlife refuges in Florida I can shoot birds or landscapes. Second, if you want to sell it go to ebay, you will get about 50-75% more there than trading it in. Your camera's, YOUR choice, NOT MINE.
Do what you want to do with i t. You are the photographer.
IMO, it served you well, and can continue to serve you well:)
I upgraded to a K-3 from a K-5. and I felt kinda sad about not petting the old dog as much as the new dog.
So I gave it a job all it's own, shooting wide angle and stars at night. So 2 companions are better than one :)

As Bill says about Hillary
Find an aspiring young photographer (perhaps one who has outgrown their P&S) and gift it along with your knowledge of it. You will gain far more than it is worth on the market.
