Well . . . A couple of months ago I upgraded from my D5500 to a D500. I kept my D5500, thinking it could be a backup . . . So a couple days ago I got it out and put a lens on it. I was so disappointed trying to use it . . . The D500 has got me so spoiled, that the slow focusing, small viewfinder, and controls issues of the D5500 was hard to deal with. I'm not sure what to do with it. Some of my options are: 1) just keep it as a spare and use only if necessary . . . 2) put my 18-270 lens on it and use it as my in golf bag, under car seat, hunting/fishing, etc camera . . . 3) put my 11-16 lens or 40mm macro on it and set it up for just taking landscapes or macros . . . 4) try and sell it . . . What do you recommend? The D5500 is a really nice camera, but I just don't see myself having much use for it anymore . . .

Depending on how much use it has, the going rate seems to be around $430. What is $430 worth to you?

There's a market place on this site. Or, you could donate it to a school. Have any friends with kids interested in photography?

Whatever you get for selling it will be more than you'll receive for a camera simply gathering dust ... And everyday you don't sell it is another day a small bit of value is lost from the final sales price ...

Turn it into an Infrared. Get a conversion.

Keep it. You'll want a backup someday for some reason and will wish you still had it. Just my opinion.

Keep it until you're mature enough to think for yourself.

Whatever you get for selling the D5500 will be less than what it would cost you to purchase a replacement should your D500 be out-of-service for repairs ... and you wouldn't need much time to become familiar with it.

I guess it depends upon the need to have a camera available and the cost however measured - actual or lost opportunity - by not having a backup. If my camera died, I could use my wife's camera, it's very similar, or she could use mine. A used D5500 goes for about $430 on ebay. You can rent a D500 for roughly the same amount for a month.

This issue isn't about cameras, it is about lifestyle, risk tolerance, and decision making, as well as the available budget constraints.

Your last sentence should answer your question. I might add my personal experience that my D5500 stills sees some limited use even with the D500.

I agree with 'Fotoarist' turn it into an infrared camera. That's what I did with my old 5000 and I'm still using it. Works great for black and white.

Being a believer in "MURPHY" I say keep it for a backup. I have a Sigma SD10 with three lenses and a flash that sits on the shelf "just in case". Every so often I clean it, power it up, take a couple of frames to make sure it still works and then put it back.
You may never need it. But if you get rid of it Murphy is sure to strike. Say a bear comes along, you go up a tree so the bear chomps on your D500 and walks off using a tripod leg for a toothpick. The choking, cackling laugh from a limb in the next tree will be Murphy.

Wish I had thought of your great answer instead of my useless one.
