Next Eclipse crossing the US will be in April 2024 (Carbondale IL again). I'd like to start
getting ready early this time, so what camera should I use, what lenses are best, should I use
any filters, can I hitch a ride to Carbondale with someone? Gosh . . . I wonder if I'll still be
around . . . .
My wife heard that one will go through Indianapolis {150 miles south of here} ... but she wants to go to New England {800 miles east} to see it - if two people who will be in their 70's will still be up to that trip and our friends still live there. A lot can happen in that time.

Thank Goodness The Eclipse Is Finally Over....

Now we can start discussing other important stuff... Such as whether or not to use "protection" filters or what's the "best camera" or the "right settings to use for....."!

Or contemplating our navels, arguably more productive and informative than some posts here.

I am confused. Won't the most expensive one give me the best image?

Yes, unless you get it on sale. Spend less, get lower quality pictures. I'm selling my car. I need a $10,000 lens. What aperture should I use when I get it?

I am glad to know that.

One of the weddings I done many years ago, the brides father showed up with a white shotgun. He said he chose white because it was a formal wedding.

Now they are saying the totality zone will also include Kokomo, roughly 100 miles south of here. My wife is nearing retirement, so we may no longer be here then, but this eclipse could be very good for local businesses {for example, there are a lot of motels around here that depend on Notre Dame home games to turn a profit - being within a hour or so of totality could help their bottom lines also}

Pretty short. I will get there the afternoon of the 30th and leave on the 3rd early morning. I would stay in Corte Madera. I like to see the presidio, the bridge, the red wood trees and of course the wharf. I've been there several times but only on business so didn't have much time to see. This time is for pleasure but I don't have much time off.

I'd suggest Muir Woods (giant redwoods) Golden Gate Park if you like gardens, Pier 39 for tourists and seals, and the Tadich Grill for apetrale sole lunch. Enjoy!

I spent 39 years teaching high school Biology, and one thing I tried to pound into my student's heads is, "There is no such thing as a stupid question, no mater how many times it has been asked before." I hope I never become so intelligent, so superior as a photographer, that I feel comfortable making fun of people's questions. It must be very lonely at that top level of photographic superiority and intellectual superiority. For me, I would rather stay low on those totem poles.

Well I managed to get a shot of the eclipse without any filters, destroying my camera or blinding myself:
From San Francisco!

What a great shot! I close my eyes, and I can see the eclipse perfectly in your photo.

If it is a Porsche, BMW or Benz - Zeiss is the way to go:) The aperture will take care of itself!
