I have been to China, some years ago and much to my dismay Cameras were not as inexpensive as one would expect. They were the same as discount sales in the US. There are Chinese Cameras but I would not buy one as there would be no support once out side the country. All others are heavily taxed making them to expensive to buy.

In China a few years ago checking out electronics and found that the warranties would not be accepted in the US for China-purchased stuff, ie by Nikonusa, etc.

Most compact cameras today are capable of very good quality images assuming the person using the camera is doing his or her part.
I prefer my Olympus M43 mirrorless when I travel. It is small and has interchangeable lenses.

HAVE A LUMIX ZS40; terrific, shoots RAW; always take it as a backup whenever I take my D7100 or D600

While I've taken my 5DII on cruises, I tried a new idea last month when we went to the Baltic. I bought a Lumix TZ80. It is a small camera with Leica lenses and shoots RAW and .jpg. I've been very pleased with the results. It cost me $399, but it has features that were very nice for a very small camera. I would encourage you looking into this camera.

How responsive is the TZ80? Also looking for a small, relatively inexpensive, camera with good image quality - you know, a Unicorn.

I am going to China on a business trip, I was looking at the A900 to carry in my computer bag to get the random shot that I might come across. I generally use my D7100 but the two VP's I am traveling with might not appreciate all that extra hardware. I used to have a small point and shoot Nikon but it was taken out of my car. I am looking for comments. I do want to keep my spend under $ 350. So as I know will happen please comment.

Thanks all.

rr, here's my advice!!! LoL
Unless for some reason it will be frowned upon that you have your regular camera with you, I would announce, "As you are all well aware, I am a photographer and my camera goes everywhere I go.., OR, I stay HOME!!!" LoL
Seriously, depending on how serious you are about your photography, and how many opportunities you have to go to China, China is one of the MOST photogenic places on this planet. The photo ops there are so plentiful and varied, anywhere you go, I would not travel there without the opportunity to take the BEST pics I could get!!!
Just me

Some very simple common Nikons in the "L" series still use AA cells. I found a new close-out one for $30. They are much more power-efficient than the old days.

See if you can find a used Olympus XZ-1 or XZ-2. My wife's XZ-1 has a 25-100 f1.8/2.5 lense in it. We also have the add-on viewfinder and eyecup. I personally feel the viewfinder and eyecup are more of a necessity than an accessory. Even though it is small, don't underestimate its abilities. It was put on a flash bracket and attached to my flash and used for shooting photographs for my wife's business when I forgot to charge the spare battery and the half used battery in my Olympus E-M5 ran out of juice.

I'd go for the Panasonic camera. I have a Lumix DMC-ZS8, 16 MP and a 2.33 x 1 sensor and it take great pictures. I also use my Motorola Droid Turbo 2 phone, 21 MP. I have used the phone for landscape pictures and blown the pictures to 8 x 10 and no grain. They are much easier to carry than my D810.
