I am going to China on a business trip, I was looking at the A900 to carry in my computer bag to get the random shot that I might come across. I generally use my D7100 but the two VP's I am traveling with might not appreciate all that extra hardware. I used to have a small point and shoot Nikon but it was taken out of my car. I am looking for comments. I do want to keep my spend under $ 350. So as I know will happen please comment.

Thanks all.

Good idea! I always travel with a compact camera. If the point of your trip is enjoyment, that's the way to go. I carry something I can fit into a belt case. Pop it out, take the shot, pop it back in.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

While I've taken my 5DII on cruises, I tried a new idea last month when we went to the Baltic. I bought a Lumix TZ80. It is a small camera with Leica lenses and shoots RAW and .jpg. I've been very pleased with the results. It cost me $399, but it has features that were very nice for a very small camera. I would encourage you looking into this camera.

How about your smart phone camera?

I used a Panasonic Lumix LX3 about 8 years ago in China and was very satisfied. No longer in production, but I wouldn't hesitate to take any of the Lumix models. An sample photo attached.

For a quality camera that fits in your pocket, look at the Sony RX100 series. For bigger camera, look at mirrorless cameras like the Sony A6500. Two big factors are how much space and money you have.

I have an I-Phone 5 which I carry but I find it very limiting, the pictures are very grainy, I believe my lens is also clouded. I am a bit fussy about pictures, I always get comments on what I take for work which is not my job but unlike a smart phone, with areal camera you can do so much more.

My favorite travel camera is the Sony RX100 - the latest model sells for about a grand - but you can get the first model for about 300 now. The first model does not have a view finder... but it takes AMAZING pictures in all light, and is pocket sized, I'll put some links to some on ebay.

The last link is from KEH, a very reputable used camera store. Everything I buy from them is perfect

The earliest model I'd get is the Sony RX100m3. Don't see any on Adorama or KEH. B&H has two used ones. New ones are slightly higher.

Looks like Adorama has a refurbished Nikon A900 available for $285.

You can't bring your entire DSLR outfit without your VP know? Put them in your bag and never take them out on the plane. Don't take pictures with their present. Keep the cameras at the hotel not bring with you to meeting.

Why restrict himself when he can have a camera with him at all times by using a small camera? He doesn't want to say "Darn, I wish my camera wasn't back in the hotel room".

He certainly have a cell phone. Use that in front of the VP. It's in style. I always use cell phone to take pictures when I am with the VP's and the president of the company. But if I could have a chance to sneak out to photograph China I would use my regular camera for that.

I've not been to China but I would not be surprised to find some good buys on cameras there. It's something to consider.
