Dry it off first!! Don't try power on first!!
My first adventure in digital photography was a Nikon P&S my Mother paid for {only Nikon I've ever owned} Less than a year after I got it I was visiting them and sleeping in the basement. The power went off in the middle of a thunder-storm, so the sump pumps were out-of-action, and my camera got soaked. I made this mistake of trying to turn it on before I had it thoroughly dry - the battery still had some charge, and the camera became toast.
Actually, uncooked rice is a known solution to this problem. Professionals don't use it, but they don't use popped popcorn either, because of the issues of shipping potentially buggy stuff, either.

Yes - dry it off first -- ha ha , just assumed that was a given
I have heard of rice, but I was in a hotel on Times Square - so I did not have access to big bowl of rice.

It would be funny to call room service and ask for a bowl of rice - uncooked.
Some labs and industries have vacuum negative air pressure facilities, with a chamber large enough for your camera. removing batteries, memory cards, then drop air pressure as close to zero as the vacuum can do should evaporate away nearly all water, leaving a residue perhaps of minerals that hopefully will not effect electronics, but may cloud lenses and other needed surfaces to produce unmarred image. Don't give up, re- soak the camera in triple distilled water, then repeat vacuum perhaps several times to thin out any mineral content. What remains is unknown, but certainly immensely less than most other methods. Mini-vibration may be tolerated by the camera, if you can introduce them as a last resort while flooded with distilled water. The micro-shaking may free up more detritus. Camera may have to be re-lubed by expert, if something sticks that shouldn't. If all that fails, it's a parts camera.

Wow! I don't recall any reference to religion, nor have I thrown any comments that may or may not be intended as insults. I have NEVER said rice was the best thing to use. What I DID say is that it WILL work, if that is what you have available. I have multiple incidents of working electronics to show for it. You want to toss out a link and a holier-than-thou attitude in response. Please take your pompous know-it-all-ness and put it somewhere impolite.
Is instant rice OK or does it have to be regular long grain?

Another thing that works with electronics (I have done several phones & voice recorders, but never a camera) is to seal them in a large Tupperware container filled with rice. It takes longer, but also takes the risk of heat damage put of the equation.

I would expect it doesn't really matter, though I have never used instant.

Why all the CRAP about Trump? You are supposedly an educator and cannot even spell the word, HEY, correctly. You spelled it HAY. Good for horses but not for the usage you put forth. You don't like the President? You have that right but keep those comments in, The Attic, please. That is where they belong.

RICE IS MYTH BUNK Well yes, lot drier than wet electronics, but there must be a driver to make the rice adsorb. Is broken glass a lot dryer than a wet camera? Yep!
Rice if heated in oven to about 275 for half hour will drive off the equilibrium moisture. Then the hot rice and the refreshed reception areas will accept moisture sort of? . Jonfrei, you and a vast number of people do not want to change your Religious Rice views... and Trump also does not accept science.... #R#s.. facts are facts!! Science well done is good guide to success.
Of common house hold items.... uncooked rice is dead last.

Love it when the far left tell us what "science" is, especially after they cook the books to get rich on their fear-mongering BS.
Instant rice is ok, uncle Bens being my favourite and if you put the camera in the microwave with the rice it dries in about 2 minutes.

Use about 70% power I would assume?

While I think your method will work very well my own method, only to get it much cleaner, is to put the camera in the dishwasher using normal wash with heated dry. I find the camera comes out much cleaner and I don't have the rice residue inside the camera. If the lens is detachable then of course the lens should be taken off the body so as to clean the sensor and inside contacts. A good spraying inside with WD-40 for protection afterward is all that is needed.

Here to be helpful. My only fear is that somebody will actually do this. I would most likely get something in the mail from an attorney saying I owe their client, somebody here on UHH, a new camera system because they followed my advice. So be it. I am up for a laugh and have a good sense of humor.
Bad...you have no idea.

Myths become sanctified like a religion... so take my comment with a grain of salt ... meant like PS being a branch of the Adobe Religion... those who believe that Adobe can do no wrong .... [ grain of salt = 65 milligrams].
OK what is handy is important... few have vacuum chambers... so Lye is perhaps handy thing... ya sure be cautious, and do not eat with beans and salusa... but it does not leap out and grab you... and if you get some on your hands a little vinegar will take care of that.... Balsamic if you are of Mediterranean Linage.
"You want to toss out a link and a holier-than-thou attitude in response. Please take your pompous know-it-all-ness and put it somewhere impolite" Hay! Jonfrei, I have much education in Chemistry and Physics and 40+ years experience .... So! there are some things that I know.... and I typically do google for information back up.
Jonfrei said " I have multiple incidents of working electronics to show for it" Now Jonfrei, how many times have you dropped your cell phone in the toilet... or "electronics" like TV? Computer? What electronics are you referring to?? OK if it makes you happy, rice is best, no global warming, earth created in a week and overtime given for in excess of 40hrs.... And Trump no Russian Quid Pro Quo!!! Relax .... No big deal
Frankly I love Rice... mix 50/50 black and brown ... beans with onions and salsa... mmmm Lunch .... will start the rice cooking now!

1. Zero
2. Multiple phones (cellular and cordless), a tablet and two laptop computers in recent memory. A calculator back when a 4 function TI would cost you over a hundred bucks. Was silica gel even available to the general public back then? You certainly couldn't order it for free 2-day delivery on Amazon Prime. Nor could you Google for alternatives. (Yes, I've been around a day or three as well.)
You can site all the chemistry you want -- it doesn't change the fact that rice works. When Mr. Right isn't available, sometimes Mr. Right-now will just have to do...
