This is just a shout out to Jerry - A big thanks!! I was in New York last week and a water bottle leaked out in my purse (filling it with water) - and killed my RX 100 IV. It really put me in a bad mood because that was a $900 camera! But I check the Hog for advice - Jerry had put in a post about using a Blow Dryer on wet cameras. AND IT WORKED !!!!!
So if you get your camera wet and it won't power on -
Take out batteries
take out card
open up every thing you can, (flash up, every door open, etc..)
and blow it dry on low, so as not to melt anything
Really aim into the any openings - like your buttons
You may have to do it, let it sit, then do it again - it took me 2 tries but it works good as new.

Thanks Jerry !!!

If it's not clean water you can rinse it out with warm water first and then dry it out. Even warm soapy water if you rinse it out again and then dry......

Another thing that works with electronics (I have done several phones & voice recorders, but never a camera) is to seal them in a large Tupperware container filled with rice. It takes longer, but also takes the risk of heat damage put of the equation.

Make sure the rice is cooked just tender and not mushy.

Yes... heat may damage... so keep it on low and away from camera.... BUT, Rice will naturally be at equilibrium moisture content and will not be "thirsty." Perhaps if you baked it it may help... while not a great thing for drying out things, rice is excellent with black beans and salsa.

Hay, have you ever unpacked something [eg Electronics] and found a bag of rice... no, you will find silica gel. Most art craft stores prob sell Silica Gel for drying flowers. Many stores, and drugstores sell "closet dry material"... that is Calcium Chloride very effective.

Rinsing... no not with tap water... buy a gallon of distilled water... no, not "spring water" DISTILLED. rinse a couple of times... and lenses UP... try to keep them dry... water prob has not penetrated deep.

Calcium chloride [Closet dry]
Calcium oxide
Calcium sulfate (Drierite)
Silica gel
Sodium
Sodium chlorate
Sodium chloride [Table salt, but I would bake it dry first... d/p]
Sodium hydroxide [Lye]
Sucrose [Yes... even sugar... but sorry no rice in the list !! d/p]

List shortened to more common materials d/p

The equilibrium of dry rice will be a lot drier than wet electronics! When you a) don't have silica gel, b) live so far out in the boonies that the locals look at you cross-eyed when you mention such stuff, and c) have no way to get to a store that may have it before the moon is high in the dark sky -- well -- a couple of 3 pound sealed plastic bags of rice do quite well... :)

I did give up on one phone after about 48 hours. I was going to toss it, but got side-tracked. About a week later, my (at the time) 2 year old grandson wanted to play with his mom's phone, so I figured I would give him the dead one. About 2 minutes into playing with it he figured out how to turn it on and make an emergency call on it... We figured this out when the Deputies came knocking at the door...!

I don't tend to keep silica gel on hand, but we always have plenty of rice!

Nothing worse than Mushy Rice (except perhaps undercooked rice).

Dry it off first!! Don't try power on first!!

My first adventure in digital photography was a Nikon P&S my Mother paid for {only Nikon I've ever owned} Less than a year after I got it I was visiting them and sleeping in the basement. The power went off in the middle of a thunder-storm, so the sump pumps were out-of-action, and my camera got soaked. I made this mistake of trying to turn it on before I had it thoroughly dry - the battery still had some charge, and the camera became toast.

Actually, uncooked rice is a known solution to this problem. Professionals don't use it, but they don't use popped popcorn either, because of the issues of shipping potentially buggy stuff, either.

Lucky! Water can be a killer - literally. Fast action and a good suggestion saved your camera.

I don't think I'm the Jerry who made that suggestion, but it's nice of you to thank him.

DO NOT USE SOAP! Soap is a fatty acid and is electrically conductive. Also attracts ambient moisture.

RICE IS MYTH BUNK Well yes, lot drier than wet electronics, but there must be a driver to make the rice adsorb. Is broken glass a lot dryer than a wet camera? Yep!

Rice if heated in oven to about 275 for half hour will drive off the equilibrium moisture. Then the hot rice and the refreshed reception areas will accept moisture sort of? . Jonfrei, you and a vast number of people do not want to change your Religious Rice views... and Trump also does not accept science.... #R#s.. facts are facts!! Science well done is good guide to success.

Of common house hold items.... uncooked rice is dead last.

Wow! Five years ago. I had forgotten about the hair dryer technique.
