I was wondering if Photomatix had died, given that the time to version 6.0 was so much longer than their website kept promising. I'm glad to know that it's still alive and kicking! I'll see if I can upgrade for free, but I may pass on this one given that I was able to get a screaming deal on Franzis' HDR software. BTW - for those who like the Franzis HDR software, StackSocial is offering the latest/greatest for only $39 whereas the list price is about $200. I was always a Photomatix fan, but I'm finding Franzis to be a much more full-featured piece of software that can generate much more realistic looking images.

The $39 version is sold out, so it says.

If you dig around, you'll see that it's sold out for version 4, but version 5 is still available.

I have version 4.2.1. Looks like I saved $39.

I opened Photomatix 4.2.1 that I have and clicked on 'help', then 'check for updates'. A dialogue box popped up and said the latest version is 6.0 and I had 4.2.1. Would I like to download the new verseion? So I went to the download site and was able to get Version 6.0 for $29. They already had me in their system under my email address. Downloaded 6.0, got the license key in my email. Everything is up and running, no problems. Sweet. I thought I was going to be SOL.

For any of those who may use, or tried, both, why do you use Photomatix over LR CC?

You must not know what Photomatix does to ask that question. It is a program for doing HDR and tone mapping.
LR is a full gamut, general, editing program.

It's possible the OP was referring to using Lightroom's HDR features as opposed to using a third party program...

Perhaps it is you who doesn't know that Lr CC includes all that Photomatix does. IMHO, Lr does a bang-up job and I have never seen the need to purchase anything else. I was merely wondering if others had made that comparison and might have an opinion as well.

Thank you. That was essentially, my question posed. Perhaps I will start a thread on that topic.

For those who use Photomatix Pro, be advised that Version 6 was just released. It appears that users who purchased Version 5 get a free upgrade; users who purchased Version 4 or earlier can upgrade for $29.

There are some new features, but, based on my initial trial, it looks like the main thing that Version 6 provides is more realistic-looking results.

Thanks for the heads up Dan. I updated from 5.1 for free. Very quick update.

Apologies! You are correct, I did not realize LR CC had HDR capabilities. Guess I will have to find that and explore it! [Embarrassing, because I try to know what the Adobe CC programs have to offer!] Thank you for the information.

When I abandoned Nikon Capture NX-D for Lightroom 18 months ago, I knew very little about Lr but I was a long time PhotoShop user. I purchased two DVDs from Laura Shoe, at a total cost of about $ 100, and watched them both, some portions more than once. Best money I ever spent learning software. I also bought Kelby's book, which is a valuable reference with an easy-to-use index. After two months I was a self-proclaimed 'expert'. Over the past 18 months my pp work is much faster, better, more efficient and higher quality and I would not even consider looking backwards. I have ben, and am, a very happy Lr CC user. Laura's DVD are divided into two sections: Input and Output. You will learn quite a bit. Including HDR and Panoramas. Highly recommended by me! Best of luck.

Chris,

I have been using Photomatix for HDR for about 4 years. I have been using LR since LR3 and have always updated my standalone version when new updates became available. I also do not now use LR CC or PS CC, and I have no intentions of switching over to either cloud version at this time. I prefer to use the last standalone versions of CS6 and LR6.1. I have read more than I care to read about why the cloud versions are better and why people should switch to it.

Thats why I use Photomatix for HDR instead of LR.

Vince
