I've found Firestone has most of what I used to edit pictures and more, a very satisfactory program. What it does not have is the facial recognition and cataloging factors that I have found so useful over the life of Picasa. I too, don't understand why Google abandoned Picasa and am still using it for minor fixes and for the useful ability to story by name and face my photos. I do not know of another service to which to change that gives you the facial recognition and ability to store by name your pictures. Is there one out there that does that?

Firestone makes tires. do you mean faststone? I still use Picasa as well as faststone and Canon's DPP

Because of that, I use Google and everything else that will help me...*and* practice good security protocols because, even though *they're* useless if a hacker really wants in (kinda like the locks on your front door versus a good burglar) the fact that I'm doing that makes me feel good. ;0)

The best guard one can have is to use mac's; their security is so much safer than PC's. Microsoft by design is vulnerable and the biggest offender of our privacy and rights is google; they are the single most and biggest threat to all of us.

You find Picasa where you find everything else on the internet. You ask the Great Google.

How about the fact that Picasa mysteriously disappeared from my computer. I loaded Google Photos like a good little boy and let it do its thing. That took long enough. Initially all I saw was a jumble of images, but this morning it seems to have ordered them into date order but no indication of folder unless you click on an image!
I found the Picasa executable on a FileHippo link, and was pleased to see it indexing the photos to give me the folder structure as I like it.
Bad Google.

I like Google Photos a LOT. It's not much of a photo editor, but does have rudimentary capabilities. But it includes unlimited storage, facial recognition, and does not share your photos unless you want to do so. It recognizes faces and creates little groups and "movies" that are surprising (and often pleasantly) and it's easy to create albums and share them privately. You can upload manually and don't have to have anything on your local computer if you don't want to. It took me a little while to get a handle on how to use it and the capabilities, but was well worth the effort. I used LightRoom for photo editing, so don't care about the weakness of the photo editing.

Google photo first got me messed up with its supposed "download" and wanted to put all sorts of additional programs on my computer. Then it doesn't seem to have any of the "old" picasa features that I got used to, so the new benefits are clunky and difficult to use. So what does everyone else think or what has been your experience? What program are you using to download, catalog and do minor edits? Just don't be shooting the messengers!

I like Google Photos, but I don't use it for processing. I post pictures for others to see. It is very capable. It can also make movies of your pictures. I use mostly Lightroom for editing.

I agree Jerry. I use Photoshop cs6 for my editing.

for all that are bad mouthing google but singing the praises of picasa. hope you know that picasa is a google product. the google photo app is amazing. it has fabulous facial recognition, IMO. it picks people out of pics that are 50 years apart. i also use it to tweak jpegs. maybe the naysayers should look at it again with an open mind. OR NOT! NSOMT.

When Google dropped PICASA and screwed up Google Photos I moved back to FLICKR...

I have been using Picasa 3 for the past 5 years and have had no problems. Last month someone posted information saying, Picasa was not being supported any longer. How true this is I have no idea.

I'm less than impressed, I'm with you. Don't understand what Google wants its role to be in all of this.
