Picasa to Google photo, not impressed!

Google photo first got me messed up with its supposed "download" and wanted to put all sorts of additional programs on my computer. Then it doesn't seem to have any of the "old" picasa features that I got used to, so the new benefits are clunky and difficult to use. So what does everyone else think or what has been your experience? What program are you using to download, catalog and do minor edits? Just don't be shooting the messengers!

I just use the software that came with my cameras. Sony Playmemories, Olympus Viewer3, and Nikon ViewNX-i, CaptureNX-D & Picture Control Utility 2. I like the Nikon stuff the best, Olympus a close second. They all do more than Picasa, and they're free. Not a fan of storing anything on the cloud.

I use the software that came with my camera to do a slight un-sharp mask. I save to Photo Gallery, which comes with Windows 7. I had to find and download it to 7 Professional. It's free, also. I do 95% of editing on Photo Gallery. I have even been able to remove unwanted (eyesores) using this software. Haven't tried Google Photo so I can't speak of it one way or the other. I have Elements 10 and Affinity but seldom use them.

I use it for storage of cam-phone pics plus, when I want to share an album with someone, it's *very* simple. I don't edit in anything but LR or PS, so don't much care about that functionality...

The more you stay away from google, the better. All those programs they loaded on your computer will spy on everything you do. In a week they will probably even know if you fold or crinkle.

Fastone is a free basic editor. It will probably do most of what you want. Its healing tool is quite good too. I mainly use it for storing and resizing photos

I like Google Photos, but I don't use it for processing. I post pictures for others to see. It is very capable. It can also make movies of your pictures. I use mostly Lightroom for editing.

Why move away from Picasa? It's discontinued, but it still works the same as always.

I'm another that uses Lightroom® for photo editing, and then I use it to upload selected photos to Flickr®. (I like the hierarchical organization possible with a paid subscription to Flickr®.)

I liked Picasa and do not care for their newer system.

Where can you download the older Picasa from?

Thanks.

Picasa is my go to editing and cataloging software. I tried google photo and it was bare bones and awful. It is amazing to me how much you can do with Picasa and how rapidly you can do it. Why google has abandoned it I cannot fathom as millions of people were using it throughout out the world. So to those who still enjoy Picasa “here’s to us”.

I've found Firestone has most of what I used to edit pictures and more, a very satisfactory program. What it does not have is the facial recognition and cataloging factors that I have found so useful over the life of Picasa. I too, don't understand why Google abandoned Picasa and am still using it for minor fixes and for the useful ability to story by name and face my photos. I do not know of another service to which to change that gives you the facial recognition and ability to store by name your pictures. Is there one out there that does that?

...the reality is that if you're on the internet you are fair game for far worse than Google. Because of that, I use Google and everything else that will help me...*and* practice good security protocols because, even though *they're* useless if a hacker really wants in (kinda like the locks on your front door versus a good burglar) the fact that I'm doing that makes me feel good. ;0)
