100% sure it's a killdeer. The behavior in #2 is common: they are pretending to be injured in order to lure you away from their nests. "Nests" are just depressions in the gravel usually. Amazing they aren't extinct - lol. We have a ton here - some near water, but that's not a requirement; they are in fields and prairie in abundance.

Interesting. I've been watching him/her for awile. Decided to pull out the big gun for him. So maybe there's a nest somewhere? My bug guy was spraying. Maybe that's what riled him.

So does anyone know if this is a male or a female?

Thanks, Linda.

Interesting info. I'll keep my eyes peeled for eggs or young. Thanks!

The ones around here have hatched. I have pics of fluffy youngsters running around from a couple of weeks ago. So maybe yours was protecting a youngster, or maybe late with eggs if others were destroyed?

A killdeer. If you get to close to it's nest, it will act as if it has an injured wing and try to lead you in another direction.

I have a strange bird that has been living at my house for about a month. S/He looks like something that might better live in a pond or lake instead of in a desert location. Does anyone know what s/he is? THANKS!

Kildeer.....the second picture shows the distraction behavior that they display when you are close to their nest. They lure preditors away by faking a broken wing.

Kildeer! Listen to their call when alarmed. "Dee, Dee!" They stay on the ground, mostly.
