I have a strange bird that has been living at my house for about a month. S/He looks like something that might better live in a pond or lake instead of in a desert location. Does anyone know what s/he is? THANKS!

Really nice series of a Killdeer luring you away from either her eggs or her chicks!

Thanks! I've watched her do this again when I open the sliding door. It's cool to watch.

I agree with those who say Killdeer. One of the comments in the bird book is "often far from water."
The black collar, white eye stripe, and feigning injury are all diagnostic. Nice capture.

100% sure it's a killdeer. The behavior in #2 is common: they are pretending to be injured in order to lure you away from their nests. "Nests" are just depressions in the gravel usually. Amazing they aren't extinct - lol. We have a ton here - some near water, but that's not a requirement; they are in fields and prairie in abundance.

I was waiting for some one to notice that trate, I thought I may get to the end , but you caught
