I have a strange bird that has been living at my house for about a month. S/He looks like something that might better live in a pond or lake instead of in a desert location. Does anyone know what s/he is? THANKS!

Really nice series of a Killdeer luring you away from either her eggs or her chicks!

I believe Killdeer also..if it had a white breast..the will lead you away from nest that they have on the ground. Very protective of the nest.

It is definitely Killdeer. They nest on the ground and the second image is showing the momma bird acting like she is in distress leading you away from the nest.

Thanks, Taylor. I have found where she's nesting! It's right in the middle of my yard. The minute I step out the front door she goes into her act. Now that I know where the nest is, I know where to avoid and where to start looking for chicks! I'm so excited!

Thanks! And I found her nest today, and she repeated the same action the minute I stepped out the door. What fun to watch. And I heard her today.

Now that you know where the nest is, I am looking forward to seeing photos of the little ones when they hatch and are running around.

I've decided I'm going to walk (carefully) around the yard looking for them. I assume the bird would probably be somewhere near the nest. Trouble is, I haven't seen him yesterday or today! But he's usually out in front.

Look for a slight depression in the ground. The eggs are speckled for camouflage. One to three eggs is common. If you haven't seen the adults for a while the nest may have been plundered. The adults are quite likely to be back next spring. There is open space behind our house so I hear them regularly. To hear a sample of the call, check out kildeer call on you tube. Hope you find the nest.

Yep. Found it! Now to maybe get some pics of the eggs. I hope they hatch before I leave!

I agree with the id of Kildeer.

If I am correct that you are in Arizona, then you might see them year round. I have seen them on beaches and sandy fields.

I had never seen them other than along shorelines at lakes and ponds. He seemed so "out of place" in my dry desert! Thanks!

I thought, Plover, but kildeers are a part of that family.

Those are all over in Texas. I live near Houston and work at the airports, they are all over the place around here. Nesting now with usually 3-4 eggs. They nest on the ground usually on sandy or rocky soil.
