Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am sure somebody will suggest a better place ...

Thinking it would be a great thing to have a traveler section, maybe even split by state so that you could easily go to previous posts from people looking for (or giving advice on) areas to photograph in a certain state. As so many of UHH'ers offered great suggestions on my impending Maine trip, I just think it would be great to be able to go to a travel section and look for a state where all the possibilities are in one place. The negative is that not everybody in the Main Photography Discussion section would necessarily look through every state to see if they could assist.

What do YOU think ?

I'd like to see something like this somewhere. The problem is subjectivity. I directed some visiting relatives to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area. They told me it was beautiful, but when they got home, they told everybody that I had sent them to a mosquito infested swamp. If someone can get this going, I would be happy to contribute some out-it-the-way sites, even though I can't travel anymore.

As I've said before, I don't like so many sections. I spend most of my time in the Main section, so if we have a Travel section, I doubt I would ever look there, except maybe to ask about a place I plan to visit, but I've done that in Chit-Chat. We could also have USA Travel, European Travel, Cruise Ship Travel - the list could be endless. Would that be an informational section, or would people post travel photos there?

I think we have enough sections already. It's easy to spot the posts you are talking about if there's a logical title.
For me, it's a bad idea. --John

I like the idea but would I look every day or even every week to see if someone was going to visit my area of the country. I doubt it.
I have responded to a few people heading to Fla and to Pa but of course it was in the main section.

Travel advice is great in cities, but in rural areas? Your best friend is probably google earth! I am an Environmental science and Geography BA..I don't do BIF .
I like to discover the cause of my landscapes and often that does not come across in my pictures. I love discovering 'the story of places' and having images as an aid memoir. The UK started life below the equator, has been dominated by many races and taught the world Industrial mining and manufacturing. That is a hell of a subject range to explore: but even that is not on everyone's 'bucket list'.

For a new area to explore look to the internet: Tourist info, wildlife and conservation groups, historical societies etc. Let those sites guide you to what interests YOU. (its different strokes for different folks) That way, you get an overview of ideas, rather than a list of other people's great moments.

I think photography is so easy to copy, but is only meaningful when it feels like it is your's alone.

Have fun

I can see where enhancements could be made where you check points of interest in your profile and when somebody posts to that states travel section, it could send an email. Just thinking out loud. I know what web development is like (and would not want to manage it !) so just throwing it out there. Another way would be to tag entries so that its easier to retrieve messages posted everywhere. I would not include actual photos but would think another folder under the state would be a place for the photos. If the right database work was done, they can be virtual folders and the search process could tailor to individuals interests, needs.

Lots of ideas, no desire to do the work though !

I've suggested this in the past. But there was never a response from the site manager. I suspect someone would need to volunteer to moderate such a section.

I agree there is a need and I think it would be quite popular. Kind of like a TripAdvisor for photographers. Some make the case that it can be done in the Main section, but it gets so many topics that they pass to back pages very fast. I've done a fair amount of traveling but really appreciate the advice that I've received here on UHH. Us baby boomers are reaching the age where many of us are checking trips off of our bucket list. So I know there would be much interest.

Just for the heck of of it, I looked through three pages of Newest Topics and picked out all those relating to travel. Teamed them up with hyperlinks and pasted them here.
A new section will need a good discipline with titles (unlike now) and preferably a moderator willing to spend time moving the posts around to get them into geographical order. A lot of work is involved.
