Ditto!
I will never put any of my cameras in checked luggage. If
I have to, Pre Ship via FedEx insured.

And they won't tell you how likely you are to have things damaged or stolen.

I carry what I can and the rest, extra lenses, tripod and sometimes a spare camera, etc, I check. I have insurance that covers theft or damage or loss with no deductible. I would have to go through the unpleasant effort of obtaining a report for the company. Under $100/year for proper coverage. Amica Insurance.

On my last couple of trips, everything fit into a backpack.

On a trip to Hawaii years ago, I checked a suitcase. I had to get off on the Big Island and get another plane to Maui, but my luggage stayed on because the plane was continuing on - to Maui. When I arrived, the suitcase was sitting there waiting for me. It flew direct, but I didn't.

It would take an awfully big backpack to carry all of my junk and I carry one that fits properly in the overhead! I didn't buy all of this junk to not take a good selection to Florida or Yellowstone. I will, however,be more selective on my next trips!

When I travel, my camera is in my pocket or in a case on my belt. I leave the DSLRs and lenses home. Photography is not the purpose of the trip.

I have insurance to cover me camera equipment also but you at a place and need them now so replacement don't count.

I can pick up my needs anywhere I go. Most airports have fairly good shopping in their area without going too far!
