Great idea. I am not a Newbie, but I am so disturbed by the snarky/snide/wise ass responses to legitimate unsophisticated questions that I considered unsubscribing.
A separate section should go far in keeping things pleasant and civil.

Wasn't the Attic supposed to be the playground for goofing off? Gee,let's make another section for not goofing off.

We could call it the basement.

We do, ofc, have the "search" option available, which I have an idea is highly unused since topics seem to re-surface repeatedly. Perhaps an "index" of helpful threads would be a step beyond the search option. I wouldn't include every thread in the index. I would only include those thread that significantly explain a particular subject. One could then peruse the index without having to do a search.

I see you have applied for the job. Oh by the by the belief is; That the Son of God would need no help to remove the stone.

As an old newbie w/a gift for dumb questions, I'm willing to take a little heat in exchange for the wisdom of the collective. Then again the list search function works GREAT!

I would love to see an edited section of newbie questions and their well-vetted, clear answers. Call it "newbie Q&A archives" or something. Then we can direct users there for reference. "Please see the Newbie Q&A Archive, and/or RTFM."

It must be tiring to have to endure the mundane and pedestrian. By "we" do mean all the "experts"????

I think the Attic should be renamed the Cess Pool. Political verbiage and how right they are vs how wrong everyone who differs with them is.

This link has started to turn into exactly what the original message was trying to prevent.
It is probably the best time now to STOP.

I want to add that segregating people so as to shield them from being "offended" is encouraging the "snowflake syndrome". I think we have enough of that in our society that I don't want it in a forum devoted to discussion and information. I say let everyone grow up, stand tall and ask your questions. Be adults.

Actually I disagree with you. It is not encouraging the "snowflake syndrome". It is just the opposite, an attempt to limit bullying and intimidation. Many new members have said they are intimidated to ask questions because they have read previous posts and have seen bullying. The people that you should be saying "grow up" to are the less than congenial responders. (It is real easy to have internet muscles on in an anonymous format like this.) Some may have forgotten they were once beginners or maybe they were just born experts. No one should be afraid to ask a question in a forum like this. The idea is not to segregate members but to more appropriately define how questions should be catorgorized so that members who do not want to see the same basic questions asked over and over and complain about it don't have to. It has been said here many times if you are offended by a post just pass it by but it seems there are enough people here that just can not do that. Maybe rather than a "Newbie" Section there should be a "Basic Questions Section" where people can ask questions about basic fundamentals that way the annoyed "experts" can avoid the questions all together.

@DavidPine, great answer! I am amazed at so many photographers who can push a shutter button til the cows come home, but those same fingers have not learned how to scroll!!!

Being a new member, having joined in January, there have been times I have felt like dropping out due to the personal attacks and put downs I have seen others endure and one or two I have experienced. I would like to see the forum develop an ethic that encourages everyone to focus their questions, comments, discussions,or arguments on the issue or topic at hand, and to avoid negatively characterizing any individual on the forum. If the personal attacks and snide remarks continue, I will find a friendlier group with whom to discuss my interest in photography. One other point: being a new member does not mean one is new to photography, and being a long term member does not mean one is an expert. I would prefer to stay with one forum where anyone may post any topic or question. I agree with the earlier comment that suggested that members who don't have something positive or constructive to say about a post should move on to one where they do.

Perhaps the problem for a person learning from this site isn't the trolls but the 'Mass' of information and their inability to 'quick reference' it.

Someone here gave me their index sheet of photographic terms so that I could bookmark interesting articles - in the right place. I am not suggesting someone spends the rest of their life sifting Links and Resources into alphabetical order. However, would it be an idea to start a fresh dictionary of 'how to'....?

In addition: would it be appropriate to make it a 'locked' topic, perhaps by category, that Admin vetted so that 'the 10 best ways to....' would not be considered as being suitable.(Sign on to the website if that is what you want)

just my two pence worth
