I will always be a Newbie, though Im working and making money and getting busier all the time. I started photography late in life, everyday I learn something new here. Most of which I'll never use
but now at least when someone talks photography to me, I don't look like an idiot , I may not have all the answers but now at least I understand the questions.

I have no idea what an idiot looks like, most people don't post accurate self portraits on UHH! I do have some opinions about certain UHH members, but that usually comes from what they post and not their physical appearance! You don't seem to be among that number.
You observation is good however, that some people make derive or dismissive comments by default, which is frequently not helpful or necessary. There are times when it may be appropriate to make a sharp remark that is intended to attract somebody's attention, but most people should do something earn such a response.
I am a newbie to this site and I have takenup photography after about six year absence. When I chose to ask a question and some sexual intellectual (fn know it all) wants to give me grief it will prove that they are as I said. We allhave to put up with these kind of people all to often. So I say to you just kiss it.
Now to my question. What is a good lens for bird and nature photography? I am on ssi and a small veterans pension. I have very limited funds so a good place to get good used lens would help. I have a Canon T6.

So far you seem to have a total of about 10 posts and I don't see anybody treating you badly, yet this post yours makes various somewhat attitudinal accusations or assertions. It's not the best way to make a good first impression.
Anyhow, you have a Canon Rebel T6 which is a decent entry level DSLR. You have limited funds you say, so I might suggest a used Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens for that type of work. Avoid the EF 75 -300 Canon lenses. KEH is a reliable source for used equipment:

The biggest issue I see as a deterrent to people learning is when 2 or 3 people start bickering among themselves and virtually take over somebody else's thread. They always start by telling the others that they just don't understand, and end up calling each other names.
A simple solution is to limit the number of posts an individual can make in a thread, other than one they started, to 2. By that time they have exhausted and pertinent information they have on the original topic. Beyond that they can start a new thread for an additional topic. I'm not talking about a rule, just a couple of lines of code should do the trick.

Frankly, to expect conversation as though the entire forum were speaking before the Queen is unrealistic. It's not necessarily rude to be blunt. I give much more latitude to those sincerely seeking an answer to ANY question, however inane it may seem, than to some others. Give and take is not necessarily uncivil. In a recent thread an individual who is an excellent photographer who also writes books about photography indicated that he was writing a new book and before he wrote needed help figuring out if there were any uses for aperture priority. He didn't use it. I answered frankly. I wouldn't be buying his book if he couldn't figure that out. Rude? I don't think so. Ascerbic? Maybe, but to the point.
For those who have not been here from the beginning, or close to it, there were some wild and woolly days at one time. They were interesting and had some very interesting characters.....rude, crude, and offensive. For the most part they're gone. The forum has become more tame. Ahh....for the good old days, when UHH could get your blood boiling before noon and let you know you were alive!!!!

Steve, your response in the thread you reference was entirely approriate. Direct, but not rude.

With all the discussion about rudeness I didn't know if it started with me. Thanks.

It most certainly did not. It might have been me!
Re-reading that thread, I think it was me, although it may depend on how people define rude. Either way, it didn't start with you, Steve.

In as much as thungs like dof can be put in the search box and get a list of messages, maybe we could create a FAQ (frequently asked question) forum that opens with a list of links to FAQ subjects. Each would have basic to advanced information. Of course, someone would have to write it all up. One link could be to a list of the best books.
I think this is a better idea , you will get the A hole replies where ever you put the question or we could just inform newbies that with any "family " you're going to get that crabby one that has to go out of their way to be negative
This is a Great idea....I am a Newbie also and really enjoy reading all the useful info on this site...Thanks
Final thoughts on this subject
1. The more separate areas that we make, the harder it will make it for the newbies, and some of our older less tech savvy members to find.
2. I have learned a lot of things from frequently asked questions! I didn't even know I had some of the questions in the first place!
3. When someone does get rude/nasty there are usually others that will help point that fact out
We see lots of questions, such as why is everything behind my subject blurry? what is ISO , SOOC etc etc.
Then we get the people replying with nasty comments, such as read a book go to school etc. ( there are of course lots of people that try to help as well)
Then there are a lot of people that wont ask their newbie question because they are afraid of the nasty responses.
Maybe its time for a newbie question area. where they can safely ask their questions and hopefully NOT get the snide remarks that are so common here.
Then if your one of the ones that hates the newbie questions, you dont have to visit that area.
what do u think?
EXCELLENT IDEA!
Thank you, some of my questions, I'm sure , are old hat to most and very basic but again I'll be 70 yrs young Apr 1st(yea, yea...heard it all) and you can teach old dogs new tricks. I really like reading this web site and all the knowledge it brings to the surface....
Thanks again
