As you pointed out, the problem is with the answers, not the questions. Putting the questions in a different area won't change responses. I've been using SLRs for almost fifty years, so I'm not a newbie. However, I sometimes ask questions that others might consider very basic.

The only solution to getting rid of nasty comments, is to get rid of nasty commenters.

Here is an idea - why not ban the few idiots? I can't believe that Admin doesn't see the benefit in that. I mean why was wabbit banned? But not some of the trouble makers we have?

You know, some of the worlds most successful and influential people are socially challenged, even mentally deranged. Remember the Think Different campaign Apple had back in the late 1990s?

As Billy Joel sang, "You may be right; I may be crazy. But a lunatic might be just what you are looking for."

Give me a room full of socially challenged, intelligent, and yes, even sarcastic misfits any day. They are quite often the ones who know what's REALLY going to happen, because they're MAKING it happen, or they're watching it fall apart because they're led by the clueless.

You just have to understand that such folks are goal oriented, not people oriented. Overlook the apparent a$$hole factor, and they suddenly make a lot of sense! They have their eyeses on the prizes, not dealing with your feelings. Cut 'em some slack.

I will disagree with you I think for the first time.

Give me a room full of compassionate people who have a conscience and feel empathy. And I guarantee you piece. As a bonus, we wouldn't be seeing threads like this either.

I think the car vered off the road a page or so ago and is down in the ditch now...

I think the question was on the possible benifts of a "nubie" dedicated area on UHH...but this did get interesting.

Hope not too many "nubies" got scared away...

That is why I bowed out of a tangent conversation. I will still watch this thread.

Main reason that Admin (site owner) does NOT ban many names from UHH, is economic. Notice the advertisements on this page, and EVERY page. Ad rates are based on membership and site views per day.
At the bottom of UHH Home page, you will find this summary:

I would rather cope with individuals with whom I may differ instead of banning anyone. Some may not easily put up with me, so I am willing reciprocate.

At the same token, imagine how many never joins this forum because of a few a$$holes.

Imagine is all you can do, because there are no hard facts about non-joiners. 73,000 members is a hard, marketable fact.

Banning is a slippery slope--a bit like free speech--where does one stop? Of course this is the prerogative of the owner/admin. I can think of two, maybe three, examples in my time on UHH.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with respectful disagreement. And I'll admit that a room full of compassionate empaths is peaceful (if only a little creepy).

I do think it's worth ignoring people when they are having a bad day. I just believe in equal time for all points of view.

In my experience, this group tends to let people know when they've gone too far.

I wonder if viewers were given the ability to Like or Dislike each post, rather than only having the option of replying, we might see different behavior. Options to indicate you feel a reply is off topic, or the conversation should be ocurring elsewhere could be useful as well. I propose that seeing a lot of likes or dislikes on a reply can help readers to determine whether a reply should be accepted or ignored, which could be especially useful to "newbies".

Do you mean like this?
"Your post is off-topic "

Yes, but like in Facebook, have the number of likes or dislikes attached to the individual reply rather than creating a new reply.

And it may be somewhat off topic, but it was meant as a possible option rather than creating a newbie section.

The folks who are intentionally making posts just to be annoying are looking for attention. They won't care if it's a like or dislike as long as they know they got somebody to 'look at them'. Those that habitually complain and then argue with the person they claim to be offended by are also just looking for attention. Otherwise they would refrain from posting a response instead of starting a marathon of aimless posts. I could understand this behavior if the admin was paying a penny a post.

Facebook ONLY has a "Like" tab, not a "Dislike" tab. The emoticons available on Facebook represent Like, Love, Humor (Haha), Surprise (Wow), Sad, and Angry.
