I think you did fine in recording a very special event. I love the looks on their faces :) which I think you captured well, and that is one of the main purpose of the pictures.
Agree that some fill light would have given a more dimensional effect (something you can experiment more with in the future), but I think with a little editing, the pictures you took will make the Dad-and-Mom-to-be very happy and will make great baby book pictures. :)

You did a good job with capture, as others have said post processing is the key. RAW files always look dull until "developed" in a PP program, my favorite is Lightroom 4, not that expensive but a powerhouse! There is a lot to learn but take it one thing at a time & you will be amazed at what you can do.

I have been asked by a very close friend to take pictures of her & her husband opening a box with baloons in it tonight to reveal the sex of their first unborn child. The balloons will be either blue or pink depending on what the sonogram results were earlier today. They will be unaware of sex so when the balloons come out of the box they will find out what they're having. It will be evening time before sunset on the beach. I have a Nikon D5100. Still learning my camera. I do have a tripod. Also remote but have never used it. What settings? Ideas? Tips? Any help is much appreciated!
Thank You!

Put the camera on auto and continuous. Make sure you have fresh batteries and an empty card installed. If you have a 24-70mm lens, use that. It will give you both wide angle and close-ups. Fire away. Take tons of pictures, and good luck!

Oops. Sorry. I didn't know this already happened.

Personally, I would be quite satisfied with your pictures. Jpeg and RAW should not have made any difference and I doubt you could have used a tripod and remote for the situation you were in. Maybe you overdid the ISO ? And if you were using the kit lens (18-55) then you limited the quality and focus a bit. The PP suggestion was good and the example definitely improved the quality. Did you try any really close up shots? Remember the quote "If the picture isn't good enough, you're not close enough !"

Wonderful couple, and I agree with most of the comments. I think you did a great job, it's hard to get a perfect picture in this situation, but for being in Manual I think you did great. I'm sure the couple will be happy, you actually have something for them, I've seen screw up so bad that there were no photos worth giving. PP a little, but don't know what programs you might have, or experience. You learned something, and had a great experience. Now you can relax, as I'm sure the stress factor added to your dilemma. Hope to see more photos from you, and keep shooting, it's the only way you learn a new cameral.

The pictures don't look too bad all things considered.

But was this all spontaneous? Some of those really look like posed, fake reaction, shots. Could be just my old photojournalism sense kicking in though.
And if some were posed that's OK if that's what the couple wanted.

BTW, that girl is REALLY cute! :D

The only staged photo is the last one. So obvious. lol. We had extra balloons just in case they were needed. So we did it again.

I think that you did a great job of capturing the moment and your photos are excellent. They do nee a little post processing but most photos do. Here is one that I worked on a little. My question is, who put the balloons in the box?

Depending on your computer, you have a variety of different photo editing tools on board. I have Windows 7 and there is
a program in it called Windows Live Photo Gallery, that I use every day. I used it to make my adjustments to your shots.
In the Vista operating system, there is a similar program,
and XP has one too.
Of the 3, I like Windows 7 the best. Mac has a program too, that beats the 3 I mentioned. Look around your computer for
these programs and use them for some everyday shots and
see what they can do for you. You've already paid for them.
A couple of shots from Kent Ohio.
Happy shooting!

Go to FASTSTONE.ORG and download their editing program, it's free. I use it on almost all my photos and it is simple to learn and use. I have other programs that I bought, but just for simple changes this is the best. Try it, you'll like it.

Don't beat yourself up. I think you can tweak the raw shots a bit, but overall, I think you did a good job.

I agree. A fill flash would have made these images pop.

Keep practicing shooting in manual...it's the only way to "conquer" it....time and effort. After a while it will be second nature.[/quote]

Your "corrected" version looks grainy and over sharpened to me.

Photoshop Elements is a low cost but very powerful editing program that can produce quite dramatic results with little time or effort. Or with study and practice can produce spectacular results even with very blah originals.
