These are a nice capture. Have you done any adjustments in photo shop or a similar program? This was a really cool idea. I like it alot!

What a cute idea. These pics are ok, and could be fine with a little pp. There are lot's of people on here (me included) that would be willing to tweak these a bit to help them look better. Nice job.

Yes, a fill in flash would have probably given you that "pop" that rpavich spoke of...

lol Mike. Thanks for all the tips. I ended up doing the wrong thing. I shot in manual mode. When I shot in Shutter mode it looked dark. I tried so many different ISO's & nothing looked good. I couldn't get sport mode right either. The pictures look so different than any other pictures I've taken. They look grainy & out of focus to me. I am not happy at all. I'm not sure if it's because I was in RAW + JPEG mode or what! Anyway, there are a few that they like but I am so disappointed in the pictures! Here are a few. Critiques, criticisms etc are WELCOME!

Nice idea for a couple, your shots are not bad at all and most
adjustments can be made in your computer. Here are my
versions of your shots, they are by no means the last word.
It's just the way I "see" them. I remember that you asked about the D5100, hope you are enjoying it. I love mine.

your photos are very good.....like all digitial photos, they need to be "defogged".

look for the photoshop/photoshop elements action called "defog" and run that on your photos...they will look great.

Your job, as I see it, was to capture the joyous spontaneity of the moment. Good job.

Since you are have a new camera and you are asking about what should be you should do if you try something new without much practice you may not do to well. I would use the KISS (keep it simple stupid) rule. Put it on that GREEN auto setting. Do as others said and start from a low position. Be ready to zoom in and out to get close ups and views of the whole group. You are going to be taking record shots not great works of art so just use auto setting and work on getting the story of the event. - Dave

The pictures don't look too bad all things considered.

But was this all spontaneous? Some of those really look like posed, fake reaction, shots. Could be just my old photojournalism sense kicking in though.
And if some were posed that's OK if that's what the couple wanted.

BTW, that girl is REALLY cute! :D

I agree with swamp gator. Some of the expressions on their faces look staged. I am assuming the couple knew the sex of the child but this is how they choose to tell everyone else!? It is still a cool idea though

If you have PSE 10 do a gradian map with sunset colors and then enhance light . After that do an orion effect under guided editor and your pics will look better but the memory of the moment will be wounderful if you do no more than look at the pics. We forget the reason behind photography is letting us reconnect with the memories.
You get an A+ in that aspect.

enhance with pse 10

Excellent captures! Dull? Maybe. Still very emotional! You may want to try this. In PP desaturate a layer to B/W. Then in an adjustment layer re-color the balloons. Merge down the layers. The emphasis will be on the facial expressions and naturally the "blue". In any event, you did well. May her pregnancy be healthy and their family continue to be full of the love you captured.

I have been asked by a very close friend to take pictures of her & her husband opening a box with baloons in it tonight to reveal the sex of their first unborn child. The balloons will be either blue or pink depending on what the sonogram results were earlier today. They will be unaware of sex so when the balloons come out of the box they will find out what they're having. It will be evening time before sunset on the beach. I have a Nikon D5100. Still learning my camera. I do have a tripod. Also remote but have never used it. What settings? Ideas? Tips? Any help is much appreciated!
Thank You!

my advice....learn to use your camera...learning a few steps at a time. The best way is to just keep shooting, AND CHECKING YOUR SHOTS IMMEDIATELY..SO THAT YOU CAN ADJUST AND RE-SHOOT IF NECESSARY....LEARN TO CONTROL THE CAMERA'S FLASH (ON AND OFF) IS A GOOD PLACE TO START, ALONG WITH OPENING AND CLOSING THE LENS.
Being able to go to Photoshop and do some easy editing...is
CRITICAL TO MAKING PEOPLE THINK YOUR A PRETTY GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER....and take the advice of EXPERTS..who are not standing next to you when their giving advice...WITH A GRAIN OF SALT.
As a 'baby gift' I could sent you a great older version of Photoshop (PS 7) if you like...no charge. (wpb.joe@hotmail.com) The attachment took less than 5 minutes....it's not a contest winner...but just to give you a hint
of what PS can do to sometimes save the 'snapshot-day'
