Watch out for the salesmen there. I think they work on commission, and they will tell you anything just to sell the product.
I had that happen to me once and I told the salesman if he was lying I'd be back for a refund. Sure enough, it wasn't what I wanted and an hour later they were issuing me my refund.

My son has a boot problem with his laptop. He took it Best Buy where he bought it together with his 3 year warranty agreement. He was told his warranty had been cancelled and they would have to send the laptop away for repairs at a starting cost of $230.

Best Buy just lost two good customers.

Well exactly what was the warranty for? I'd have to call foul on that. I never buy extended warranties. It's just a profit maker for the stores. Most like if an item is going to go bad it'll happen under the original manufacturer's warranty.

I buy the two year repair/replacement warranty for my nephews tablets. Since he can go through 3-4 a year, it pays for me to do it that way. In his case, it is like a BOGO.

Do a nasty if they won't stand by the product. Go in and buy the same mouse, take it home and check it out if it good just put the bad mouse in the package and return it. I did it once when I purchased a Bamboo pad from Best Buy, it was bad on opening the package, I took it back for exchange but somehow could not find the Purchase Receipt. They were to busy to check the Credit card records or just did not care. I purchased another bamboo, swapped packages and returned it as defective.

Do sales receipts have serial numbers on them?

My daughter bought me a Arc Touch Bluetooth mouse for Christmas. I was planning to buy a laptop in the new year which I did. When I was setting up the new laptop I tried to pair the mouse. Had a hard time pairing the mouse so I called Microsoft tech. He could not help and said to take it back to vendor where you bought it. I told him that my daughter bought it from Bestbuy and they have a 15 day return policy. He said that he would send a email to me indicating there is a problem with the mouse. Now the fun time starts. Went to Bestbuy to exchange the mouse for another. Well the happy person said that they have a 15 day policy. This went on for about 10 minutes before getting the manger. Manger comes over and says same thing about 15 day exchange policy. This lasted for awhile with me leaving Bestbuy with my mouse stuck in my ?? So much for buying at Bestbuy.

If she bought it with a credit card, you can get your money back by disputing the purchase. It was defective and you have a right to a refund. It's perfectly understandable that being a Christmas gift, you were going to buy a new computer for it and it doesn't work. Te return policy would apply for an item you changed your mind about, not something defective.

You said you could not pair the mouse to the computer .... Bob (above) stated he has a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard .....I do too ... it has been working great for 6.5 years. Mine has a tiny receiver which plugs into the laptop's USB port ...... the Logitech system pairs to the computer through this device .... you did not mention this small device .... it would be easy to miss in the packaging if you did not understand how this works. In my den, I have a pull out surface to put the keyboard and mouse on ..... and the computer is a HP Envy 17" and have a 23" monitor on each side of the laptop screen ... for triple screens .... it is great for photography use, genealogy, etc.

Actually I am using a Logitech bluetooth mouse on this computer. On my other computers I use ones with the little Nano receiver. Both work beautifully. I've been using Logitech products for over 20 years and always good results.

Not so with the Bestbuy store brands.

The warranty was 3 years parts and service.

In the UK we have the Sale of Goods Act (as amended) which places the responsibility on the seller aka vendor and NOT the manufacturer or importer. . Seller is required to supply goods which are fit for purpose and which have the durability which would be expected by a reasonable person. If the good fails with in six months, it is the responsibility of the vendor to show that the purchaser is responsible for the failure of the good. My experience is that quoting the Sale of Goods legislation usually has the desired effect. However, on three occasions I have had to go to the my local County Court and take out papers under the Small Claims Court (ask for a Small Claims pack which gives all the necessary forms and details). This will cost a small fee. This fee is all you can lose - vendor cannot claim costs from you. In my experience, every time the vendor has settled my claim (value of good plus fee plus nominal interest) on receipt of the Court papers. The Sale of Goods Act (as amended) applies regardless of any conditions which the vendor may seek to impose.

In my opinion not enough people in the UK use this method to deal with shoddy goods.

Is there not similar legislation in the US of A?
