I'm sure that there are variances between different Best Buy store reactions to problem equipment.

I had posted here about my focus problem with a new Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6e. Could not resolve to my satisfaction but had a 30-day return policy in effect (Christmas present.) That would have put me in the middle of a trip to Puerto Rico. So I went back to the store where it was purchased and said I'm willing to continue working the problem (with a suspicion that my camera might be the problem), if they would extend the return policy.

The helpful salesman said "can do" but was overruled by his manager. I could either return it for full refund that day or get an extension BUT only with a store credit refund.

It should be no surprise that I returned it then and got my money back.

And they lost a sale that was salvageable.

Microsoft warranty indicates it is for 3 years. Only requirement is a receipt that verifies the owner period. From what I have read, it pairs with a MS Surface. Here are some links you might find useful for pairing:http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=Arc+Touch+Mouse+Drivers&FORM=IRMHEP

I told him that my daughter bought it from Bestbuy and they have a 15 day return policy. He said that he would send a email to me indicating there is a problem with the mouse. Now the fun time starts. Went to Bestbuy to exchange the mouse for another. Well the happy person said that they have a 15 day policy. This went on for about 10 minutes before getting the manger. Manger comes over and says same thing about 15 day exchange policy. This lasted for awhile with me leaving Bestbuy with my mouse stuck in my ?? So much for buying at Bestbuy.

My experience with Best Buy is as follows: if you are buying something that you are very familiar with and can use blindfolded Best Buy is ok. If you buy something and may need a smidgen or more of technical advice go somewhere else.

That rings true with just about every department store, be it Walmart, Sears, or whatever. Getting good technical advice from an under-trained, underpaid store employee will always be the exception, not the norm.

While that be somewhat true, many of these stores provide a showroom and associates that do the product show and tell. Then many shoppers go home and shop the internet.

I had a problem with a laptop. Basically the same issue you have described. A friend who used to work there says that is how they are trained to handle this. I was given a phone number to call from a manager. I called it and the issue was finally taken care of.

Do a nasty if they won't stand by the product. Go in and buy the same mouse, take it home and check it out if it good just put the bad mouse in the package and return it. I did it once when I purchased a Bamboo pad from Best Buy, it was bad on opening the package, I took it back for exchange but somehow could not find the Purchase Receipt. They were to busy to check the Credit card records or just did not care. I purchased another bamboo, swapped packages and returned it as defective.

I second the suggestion to get a Logitech mouse. Both my wife and I use the Logitech M317 and love it. No problems for several years now. Available from Amazon for a range between $12 and $18 depending on color or special designs like flowers etc. Wireless and works with a very small receiver about the size of a dime plugged into a USB port. We replaced our Apple magic mouses with these when the Magic mice went kaput.

I tinker with computers a bit, I just like to see how stuff works. My cousin took his little over a year old laptop back to the Geek Squad for failure to turn on. They told him it needed a mother board, and that it was out of warranty and would be cheaper to buy a new one. I opened it up, did a little testing with a multi meter, purchased and replaced a $2.39 power switch, and the machine has been running for 3 years since. Geek Squad is just a joke. We buy computers from Best Buy because of pricing. When doing so they will ask you to spend an additional $100 to have Geek Squad "clean up & optimize the system before you take delivery. Never pay this. All they do is remove all the OEM special trial run software, something you can do yourself in 15 minutes.

Everything depends upon the store. I bought an unlocked cell phone from bestbuy and on their website and the ad said it had a price watch guarantee. I brought in an ad from Amazon with a lower price and no questions asked got the discount. Well while trying to insert the sim card I bent the pins and the phone was toast. The next night I looked online and the store I bought it from was out of stock. The nearest store that had it in stock was about 50 miles away. So after ordering online and driving an hour to pick it up I showed them the ad for the cheaper price. They then told me that it did not have a price match guarantee on cell phones, I responded that online it said that it did have a price match guarantee. They then pulled out a flyer that stated in fine print no price match on cell phones. I then told them to look online and they will see what it said. Anyways after about 15 minutes of blood boiling they gave in and matched the price. The next day I returned the phone that I broke for a refund without a problem

My experience with Best Buy is as follows. Several years ago I purchased a desktop computer. Took it home and attempted to use it. The computer wouldn't even boot up. Took it back to the store and they said they would take care of it. A week later the store called and said the computer was ready. Took it home again and still had problems with it. Back to the store I went. They offered to repair it and repairs would take a couple of weeks as it had to go back to the manufacturer. Told the clerk I didn't want to wait a couple of weeks, I want a new computer. We discussed this back and forth with me slowly raising my voice to a level that the whole store could hear. The manager decided to make an appearance at this time. I explained the computer has been in the repair shop longer than my home. His response was: You need a new computer. Yeppers!

I have a BB 4 miles from my home. Very occasionally, I purchase an item. 5 years ago, I did purchase a 65 inch Samsung Smart TV. I found it advertised online at a local electronics store. It used to be known as "BuyDig.com". They had the TV advertised for $800 less than the BB price. I printed put the ad and BB, very reluctantly, matched the price. The manager was visibly upset. All my electronic purchases have been at Amazon or B & H for the past 4 years. Free expedited shipping, lowest prices and fabulous customer service. And, no NJ sales tax at B & H. I don't think the "Geek Squad" is the best tech support. I do most of my own tech support for computers or a use local repair shop when I cannot manage the repair.

Best Buy employees I've dealt with have been pretty knowledgeable. Walmart. Forget it. Somebody must have to drive those idiots to work. There's no way they can operate a vehicle. It's why Walmarts have automatic doors. So the employees can get in and out.

My son has a boot problem with his laptop. He took it Best Buy where he bought it together with his 3 year warranty agreement. He was told his warranty had been cancelled and they would have to send the laptop away for repairs at a starting cost of $230.

Best Buy just lost two good customers.

I hope he did not just trust that response. That's ridiculous. Sorry to hear that.
