Another 4 wheel drive all matte track Snowcoach came in with the shop mechanic, and they really popped the chain on it hard several times to get it to come out.

I loved seeing these great photos, John. I have photos of the Lower Falls that I took in late summer a few years ago so it is very interesting to see what they look like in winter.

So, how do they get a stuck Snow Cat unstuck?

Thanks all! We are really thrilled to have a large bull elk hanging around 7 mile bridge this winter. It is the largest bull we have ever been able to photograph during winter in Yellowstone. There are a lot of trumpeter swans this year too, as many of the rivers are frozen over elsewhere, but of course the Madison does not freeze with all of the hot water flowing into it.

I'm thrilled to see that the Wolves missed a few bull elk and that there still are some left in YNP

The elk population has continued to decline with the wolves. As a result, the wolves are ranging over larger areas looking for animals they can bring down and some attempt taking bison - a dangerous proposition. Most of the elk migrate out of the interior of Yellowstone in Nov and winter in the field south of Ennis. Some suspect the winter elk herd along the Madison only happened when the wolves were exterminated decades ago and things are now becoming more normal. I am in favor of a complete and natural ecosystem inside the park and wolves are certainly a part of that. Wolves kill coyotes, so now fewer coyotes are killing red fox and they are more numerous. Also the willows are returning that helps beaver and moose.

I have been leading photo tours by Snowcoach in Yellowstone and will be doing that for the next month. I don't get to shoot much as I help my clients mostly, but sometimes I do get to shoot a little. Here are a few examples. Yellowstone is a fabulous winter destination. The best time is dependably between mid-January and mid-February when it is likely to have plenty of snow. I have led winter tours here since 1993, and due to all of the restrictions, the park is very lightly used in winter, so far more peaceful and quiet.

That is lower falls, about 306 feet high. It has been a cold season in Yellowstone and much ice has formed on the outside of it, but it continues to fall behind the ice shield.

Very nice series. We were there 2 years ago in winter and I believe Yellowstone is prettier in winter than in summer. And the major roads are all kept open to tracked vehicles so it's possible to get around. We saw a pack of wolves feasting on an elk off in the distant. You should have seen all our photographers lined up at the side of the road snapping away!!
