The elk population has continued to decline with the wolves. As a result, the wolves are ranging over larger areas looking for animals they can bring down and some attempt taking bison - a dangerous proposition. Most of the elk migrate out of the interior of Yellowstone in Nov and winter in the field south of Ennis. Some suspect the winter elk herd along the Madison only happened when the wolves were exterminated decades ago and things are now becoming more normal. I am in favor of a complete and natural ecosystem inside the park and wolves are certainly a part of that. Wolves kill coyotes, so now fewer coyotes are killing red fox and they are more numerous. Also the willows are returning that helps beaver and moose.

Thanks all! We are really thrilled to have a large bull elk hanging around 7 mile bridge this winter. It is the largest bull we have ever been able to photograph during winter in Yellowstone. There are a lot of trumpeter swans this year too, as many of the rivers are frozen over elsewhere, but of course the Madison does not freeze with all of the hot water flowing into it.
