Makes it easier for unscrupulous stores like 42nd St Camera to remove essentials from the box and re-sell them separately

A new camera should be in a sealed box. An open box to me is an open box, not a new camera. An open box mandates a lower price and many times it is called refurbed.
B&H is a reputable dealer. If I buy a new camera from them and the camera comes to me in an open box I immediately will contact them requiring an explanation.
I will not accept an open box unless a decent discount is offered.

William, you must not have a camera, yet here you are on a photo forum. What gives? If you have some gear, how did you get them? Used?

True, and that's why you should be especially careful and research the reputation of the seller before ordering.

I ordered it from BH Photo and customer service representitive also said it supposed to be sealed most in time. What I've learned from this is that I should not apply my common sense to all thing..And also this forum is really powerful and helpful tool for the people to seek the answers and experiences regarding photography.. I just did not recognize it at that time... Thanks

I've bought enough Nikon gear over the years to be able to tell if it's been out of the box or not. I don't remember ever getting a sealed camera, or lens.... box. As I only buy from reputable dealers, B&H included, I have never had a problem. Happy New Year!

How can you expect a new Nikon in a sealed box when this in not done? Would you be happy with a piece of tape across the box top to sides location? That is hardly a seal of any type. I personally look for a camera that has not been removed or unpacked before. You can easily tell if someone has taken the camera out of the "non sealed" box and taken off the thin soft foam or plastic wrap. Many time the plastic is "sealed" at the end like it is in some food storage systems. Is that what you called sealed or do you insist on a seal of the outside box? If you are in a camera store and the clerk takes a new camera out of a box for the first time and demo's the features to you are you saying that then you would not want to take that unit?

Thanks for sharing your experience... I may misunderstand.. I already returned the item for refund... I may mess up... Thanks again.

Oh boy! This is how that brand new camera becomes a refurbished camera from the factory. We need more customers like you so that more refurbs become available at a discount.

Any time I get one of those "sealed in plastic that could be used for a space shuttle" I stick it through my neighbor's fence. By the time his pit bull is through with it--and I can retrieve it--I can usually get it open.

Funny, but I just read an article about Nikon not sealing its boxes. Almost every other product I've received has come in a sealed box. Maybe cost-cutting can go too far.

I'm a Canon shooter and I don't believe any of the boxes I get from Canon, Tamron and Sigma are ever sealed.

Well then you will never be able to buy a new Camera

IMHO sealing the camera box would prove nothing. The box is marked with the serial number of the camera inside and all contents are listed.

There is always a list of the correct included contents of the box. It is there to allow you to insure that nothing is missing. Duhh

B&H is a high integrity and of long standing . They will not charge a stocking fee. If they say an item is new, then it is 99.99% of the time, a reputation well earned and also shared by several of he better large camera retailers. I also buy some used items from them and their grading system is top notch also. They will accept the return and will probably sell you what you desire. If there is a problem, they stand behind their sales and will make things good. I have used them for over 25 years with outstanding results. They are not the only one who is good, Sammys Camera in California is a also great, as is Hunts, and so on. Their communications are outstanding, and those mentioned are only some of the outstanding stores.
