Just a note, if you decide to get a 24-105 (you might get a FF one day) then you can save some money by getting the Mark I (I got it as my kit lens with my 6D.) LensRentals published a test of the Mark II by one of their people in which he concluded it was an improvement over the mk I but not enough to justify the almost doubled price.

Well maybe if you are heavy into video because of the new motor. I only did one short video with my 6D just to see what it looked like and have never done any video with my 7DII (well once while playing with the controls I accidentally hit the video but turned it off and deleted it without looking}. For video my wife has a Panasonic videocam and often does video with her SX50.

Wouldn't the EFs 18-135 be more versatile on a crop body? Starting out with a FOV equivalent of almost 40 mm to me is defeating in an walk around lens. I totally understand the 24-105 on a FF. I originally bought the 16-35mm 2.8II before having a FF but, I knew that I was buying an EF mount for a reason. I upgraded shortly to FF after that. IMO buying this focal length without thoughts of going FF does not make sense.

Hi......I'm new and my name is Danny and this is my first post. I have a Canon 7D Mark ll. I read a review on the 24-105 by a very well known photography guru who said it was senseless to use this lens on a cropped censor. I have a 50mm, 10-18mm and 100-400 and I would like to get a zoom for general purpose use. I would appreciate any advice you might offer. Thank you.

Great zoom lens on crop mode or full frame!

I am glad to hear that -- if it is too heavy, I recommend the now discontinued Canon zoom 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II -- Look on line for this lens BUT be sure that the lens has the "flower" on the lens - Japan is nice but made in Taiwan will do-- if you can find it. Don't pay more than $150 for it. I think money is important unless you don't give a dam!

I have an EF 24-105 L series lens on my 760D/T6s. It performs very well on that camera and there's no reason why it would not perform equally as well on your 7D MkII. My only complaint is that it's big and heavy, but that's a small price to pay for a quality and versatile lens.

Best,

Jason

Hey Danny, I think that the 18-135 makes more sense as a general walk around lens for the crop frame camera. The reason the guru says the 24-105 does not make good sense is because the wide end of the lens (24mm) really is not very wide on a crop frame camera so there may be times that you may have wished you had a wider lens on your camera. I know that you have the 10-18 but will you always have both lenses with you and do you always want to carry a camera bag full of gear each time you take your camera out? I have owned both lenses and the 24-105 is a fine lens but I am not so sure that it would be the better lens on a crop camera, you may want to also consider the 15-85, it is a better lens than the rap that it gets, have owned it too and it is a nice lens and very well built.

The 24-105 is a great lens - if wide enough for you and you do not mind the size weight or cost !

The 15-85 is also a great lens - if you do not mind the slow aperture and cost.

The Sigma 17-70 contemporary is also a great APSc lens - with good speed ( 2.8-4) AND relatively inexpensive.

You can buy the lens with confidence but I tend to agree with the gentleman that offered you his opinion.
The lens works very well with full frame bodies from what I have seen.

Thanks again for your eagerness to help out. Seems to me from what the majority has said that the 24-105 is a great lens and even though it will do a good job it's best suited for a FF which I hope to have one day but I shoot a lot of wildlife including birds so the APS-C is right for me at this time. I believe I need to decide between the 15-85 or the 18-135. Hope everyone has a great weekend! P.S. I hope I'm doing these replies right.

Use a full frame Canon and the 24 x 105 is on the camera most of the time except for when the 14mm or macro required !!I do not use long telephoto lenses any more ! Welcome to the HOG !!

Some of these "gurus" who live in Fla are panhandlers who flip flop their opinions every few months.
Take their advise with a grain of salt.
