Hi......I'm new and my name is Danny and this is my first post. I have a Canon 7D Mark ll. I read a review on the 24-105 by a very well known photography guru who said it was senseless to use this lens on a cropped censor. I have a 50mm, 10-18mm and 100-400 and I would like to get a zoom for general purpose use. I would appreciate any advice you might offer. Thank you.

That is ridiculous. It will be a great lens for you.

I have used this lens on both a crop and a FF body, and it is an excellent "all-around" lens. It was included as a kit lens on 7D2s and 5D3s, so there are a lot of them available. Not very wide on a crop body (but just right on FF), but on the long end, I've found that the extra FL over the 24-70 is very useful, not to mention the IS. I often consider saving up for a 24-70 f2.8 (which is a classic), but while I'd like to have the extra speed and bokkeh when wide open, I'm always reluctant to give up the IS (which is very useful and worth more than a stop when shooting at the long end) and extra "reach"of the 105. There is a known ribbon cable failure issue with this lens, which reportedly shows up, if at all, around 20,000 exposures - probably related to how often you change the FL (zoom). I've had mine for almost 5 years with no issue. It is also fairly light and compact, and at the current going price of $500-$600 for a good used copy, a bargain for an "L-quality" lens. There's a new MK2 version of this lens just introduced and available about now (which may drive the price of the Mk1 down a bit further)

That lens is on my T3i about 95% of the time. I love it. Being very well known doesn't mean he knows everything about everything. Some people are just pompous a__holes.

Welcome to the hog.
I use one on my 7DII all the time and it does a great job. Some advocate not using FF lens on APS-C sensor cameras because of the size, weight and cost. They also think it is a waste because it throws an image much bigger than the sensor. My personal view on that is it means the crop sensor sees the center portion of the image which is usually sharper than the edges and corners resulting in more evenly sharp images.

I have a FF & a crop sensor bodies. I have the 24-105f/4 L. It is a great lens of the FF. I have used it on the crop and it is OK. I find a much more suitable lens on the crop is the EFs 15-85mm. That glass is so amazing. I have to agree with the article that you read. Call me names or not but I have the proof as a side by side.

It's a wonderful walk around lens for your camera. On a crop camera it just doesn't go very wide with a 35mm equivalent angle of view of 38.4mm to 168mm. Many people prefer something much wider like a Canon EFs 15-85mm with a 35 mm angle of view equal to 24-136mm. If you're not worried about the wide end, and prefer the reach, is a good choice. A few extra millimeters on wide end makes a bigger difference than 20 or 30 mm extra on the long end.

I have used this lens on both the 70D (crop sensor) and the 6D (FF). It is a great over-all lens - an extremely useful range for a "walk-around" lens and very, very sharp. Unless I am doing wildlife photography with the telephoto, it is what stays on my camera at all times. Because there have been a lot of expensive bundles with this lens, you can find new lenses available which are "white box" - separated from a kit but NOT gray market. I bought one for a little over $500 and had no problems registering it with Canon. Over all, this lens is worth paying full price if you have to!

Welcome. You should remember that all photographers are not created equal. I have used the 24-105 L lens on both full frame and crop cameras. It does an outstanding job!

I have read articles which have stated the lenses designed for crop cameras can outperform lenses built for full frame which are used on crop cameras. I own the 24-105 mk1 version and love it. I use it on both my crop camera and full frame camera. I own a 60D and 6D. You won't go wrong using it as I use it on both my full frame and crop sensor cameras. But if I only had the crop camera then I would have to strongly recommend you at least try the EFs 15-85mm. I've heard great reviews regarding it.

I use a 7D with the 24-105 as my "Walk around lens". It is always on the camera unless there is a reason to use a different lens.
The guru I doubt has any experience with this lens.
It is great on a crop sensor camera and works well. If you can afford the MII version I would get it though.
I also have the same lens linu that you have and the 24-105.
Get it and love it.

I use this lens with my Canon 7D Mark II and also the Canon 7D. I get some of my BEST photos using this lens. As an aside, I also get pretty terrific photos with my Tamron 28-300mm lens. That's pretty much my "walk-around" lens. Good luck. Lots of good advice has been offered here for you.

I have an EF 24-105 L series lens on my 760D/T6s. It performs very well on that camera and there's no reason why it would not perform equally as well on your 7D MkII. My only complaint is that it's big and heavy, but that's a small price to pay for a quality and versatile lens.

Best,

Jason
