Over recent years, I have sold used equipment to Adorama, B&H, KEH as well as on EBay. A couple of comments from those experiences. 1). It is likely you can get a higher price from an eBay sale; BUT, you can also have a much worse experience if you wind up with a buyer who wants to play games. (I had that experience with a highly rated buyer, and it soured me on that channel.). 2) The retail store buyers I mentioned all dealt in a professional and ethical way with me. 3). As far as prices/offers received from the retailers, bear in mind that they will differ depending on what equipment a particular Used Department is looking for (or, conversely, has too much of) at a particular moment in time, as well as their assessments/experiences on what their buyers want. 4). B&H and KEH will usually provide a quote sight unseen, subject of course to an inspection when received. Adorama usually wants you to ship (at their cost) the equipment them to inspect before giving an offer. While I've done that, it introduces a hassle factor and raises IMO the problem of time passing while you cannot sell elsewhere because they have your equipment until/unless you cannot reach agreement and have them ship it back. 5) Also, with Adorama, when they say they'll give you 70% of its value, that sounds pretty precise. However, you can not just look at what they are selling the same item in same condition for in the Used area and assume 70% of that. They determine 'value'. Even with that quirky process, I've probably sold more used equipment to Adorama than elsewhere because their offers ended up better. Plus, very importantly, if you are looking to 'trade' for a new item, they have been good at helping on that 'buy side ' of the trade. KEH is also helpful in that way if you're wanting to trade for an item (usually 'used') that they have. B&H seems much more compartmentalized between their 'new' and 'used' departments, so I've not had that important 'trade' benefit with them. Overall, I'd think your best prices would come from private sales -- maybe here. Then, my second course would be to email a request for quote to all three retailers I mentioned, then review and follow up. My personal least-desired alternative would be eBay, but maybe that's just me. Good luck.

BEWARE OF CRAIGS LIST.....Do not sell to out of state buyers. I was totally ripped off by one. Even Craigs List WARNS about selling to out of state buyers.

I have been asked to help sell a Canon Zoom Lens EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS. I looked online, searching for camera shops that buy used products. Note: I'm not trying to sell the lens in this post. I'm asking for a camera company review.

After an inquiry, Adorama contacted me. Instructions: we send a UPS label. Free shipping. We evaluate your lens and offer you 70% of what it's worth. If you decline, we send it back. Free shipping.

This all sounds good until I searched "Adorama Reviews." Not so good.

Will I get paid? Will I get the lens back? It's not mine. I can't afford to lose it or battle to get it back.

I trust the opinions of Hedgehog members more.

What advice can anyone provide?

private message MT Shooter. He has a camera store in Montana and could possibly sell the lens for you at a commission.

Camera stores like KEH and B &H are reputable but discount purchasing of used gear because they need to make it up on resell.

Another option is to go to this web site www.photographersonthenet.com. I. The classified section will have similar lenses listed and you can get a good idea of resell value there.

Good luck with your sale.

Don't forget on eBay the listing fee and the sale fee (if it sells) and Pay Pal fees. They add up.

I have been using Adorama for years. They are a quality company and I have never had a problem with them. Their customer service (Helen) monitors this site and she will weigh in if she finds customer dissatisfaction. I have dealt with her before and she is super.

I have sold camera bodies, lenses and other photo equipment to KEH. If you go to their website and complete the form to obtain a quote for your equipment it will usually give you an idea of what you might expect to receive from them. You must be honest as to the too the condition of the equipment, and give it a critical look as a buyer and not a seller. I purchased a camera and lens from Adorama, and also forwarded them some used equipment to sell. Of course it took far less time to ship the new camera body and lens, I feel like the two weeks it took to receive a quote and payment was long. Yep, I realize the cart may have been ahead of the horse, but CAS can cause right click now to place the order.

Another option is to use Craigslist. This will then become a strictly local sale, cash, to a local buyer. Do your basic research for a fair price, look on Craigslist to see how it looks and works, and try it. It is very easy, and I have used for both buying and selling several times. For the sale, you may want to meet the potential buyer in a public place like a coffeeshop.

I have bought and sold a number of items on craigslist, no problems. I bought a pickup truck, a $23,000 boat, snowmachines etc in this way. I usually try to meet in a public place, but it's not always possible. One person has the cash and the other has the item and then if they come to an agreement they swap. No wondering about how the item looks or if the payer will pay. Pretty simple.
