I have been asked to help sell a Canon Zoom Lens EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6 L IS. I looked online, searching for camera shops that buy used products. Note: I'm not trying to sell the lens in this post. I'm asking for a camera company review.

After an inquiry, Adorama contacted me. Instructions: we send a UPS label. Free shipping. We evaluate your lens and offer you 70% of what it's worth. If you decline, we send it back. Free shipping.

This all sounds good until I searched "Adorama Reviews." Not so good.

Will I get paid? Will I get the lens back? It's not mine. I can't afford to lose it or battle to get it back.

I trust the opinions of Hedgehog members more.

What advice can anyone provide?

Why not try selling it on this forum - Members Buy and Sell section? I've sold a lens here and was pleased with the results.

The comments likely referenced the value of the payment rather than the process. The lens was selling new for around $1200 just over 2-years ago. None of the resale companies are going to pay more than half that now to buy it 'wholesale' for purpose of reselling at a profit (for them). If you want to maximize the payment, sell to an individual and not a resale company.

Many people selling equipment for the first time do not realize the glut of equipment available for resale. They know what they paid for their camera or lens not realizing no one will ever pay that much again for the item now in a used status. An item replaced by a significant upgrade such as the vII of the 100-400L will see the value of the old model fall seemingly through the floor even though nothing about the (then) excellent performance of their lens has changed.

Check with KEH, they have buyers all over the country. Also call and ask local stores. Some do a great job of fair pricing on purchasing used, some rape the seller.
Another idea is consider posting on Ebay, or one of the many web sites, this one included, which allow you to post listings.
With the Canon 100-400, they can be amazingly sharp, but lose their calibration eventually. My girlfriend just sold one for about $800. Hers had been tuned up by Canon and came back tack sharp.
You can check Ebay sold items for the going prices. Good luck.

Adorama is not going to steal your lens!

What hogwash!

I would sell it on Craigslist. It should go for about $800/$850 if it's in good shape. Test the lock ring. To test it, move the lens to 200mm, lock the ring, and hold lens pointing down. If the lens falls or creeps down, then the lock it's working and will cost the buyer $300 to have fixed. Sell for less. If it's good and you don't see any scratches in the paint, and the glass is clean, you will have no problem getting what I said in the beginning.

PS - those large retail stores are like car dealers. They take your used car and give you squat for it. You will feel raped. All those stores like Adorama and B&H are going to tell you at first that they think they will pay X amount but after they get it they will offer you about half to 2/3rds that amount. Most people will always take it because it's a hassle to ask for it back.

I am not trying to disparage Adorama. I have no experience with them. No feelings good or bad but did Google, "Adorama Reviews."

Their representative called me. He was very professional and gave me great confidence that I was dealing with a reputable company. By chance, I decided to look for reviews. Not good. The rep that called was so good at promoting his company, that and the rough reviews, caused conflict. That's why I went to UH. I trust comments like yours, albeit rather brief.

I've had good luck with Adorama used dept. Seems fair, although with a little work, you probably can get a little more for the lens.

Good comment. That's what I'm discovering from the comments, so far. My gut feeling is positive about Adorama. Your comment helps. The rep that called was sharp. Not aggressive. Without asking, he provided sequential information that was spot on and confidence building. I would hire him.

I checked UH Classifieds. There is one such lens at $850. Mine would be priced at $700. I'm guessing, Adorama would offer me under $500. While wanting to be expeditious (owner died, money will go to the family), I should try to maximize the return.

Thank you for your comments.

Adorama is a good retailer. I have purchased lots of stuff from them with no problems. As suggested above check with KEH as they specialize in used equipment.

Sell here on the forum, EBay or Craig's list. When I traded up from the 100-400 mk I to the mk II the guy at my camera store told me to sell it on line because he couldn't afford to pay me nearly what I could get that way.

Have no fear about Adorama. I can't address the reviews you looked at, as I have had nothing but great relations working with Adorama. But, I will say, there are some folks who simply cannot be satisfied.

In short, if you are satisfied with what Adorama is offering, don't hesitate. They'll treat you right.

Adorama is just fine to deal with as is B&H, or KEH for selling your stuff. Adorama gave me a price sight unseen from just a list I sent them...but wasn't final till I sent the items to them, quote was low so I didn't deal but probably spot on. We know our stuff is worth more than we'll get for it, just the way it is selling used...you may try selling on Fred Miranda's site if not here. http://www.fredmiranda.com/
Remember, they are like a car dealer, they need to make money on the resale, that money could be in your pocket if you sell privately.

Ask MT, he may purchase and he's in Montana...

ebay. Take a few good pictures, write a good description, post it, and it will be gone in a week. Here's what that lens has sold for recently/.
