24 vs 12 mp. That's bigger in my books.

First off, the D500 is a 20 MP sensor, not 12.
The camera is built for speed (10FPS) and better dynamic range at high ISO's; see a quote from DXO:
"But like the D5, it looks as if some sensor resolution was traded for improved DR at high ISOs, along with faster readout. Color depth, dynamic range and low-light ISO measurements are all excellent, but just not quite at the same level as the more pedestrian offerings."

So, as usual, it depends what you are going to be using the camera for.
If shooting sports- absolutely the best choice. Concerts in dim light, ditto.
But for photography where high detail is desired, I'd still choose the 24MP D7200 if you are staying with a DX camera.

You are confusing # of megapixels with sensor size!

True, but most people knew what he meant since he said he wanted to stay with DX.

Now you also know.

Ordered another D300 last month...less than 7,000 actuations...could have gotten something else...but this camera is like the D700 which I also have...they are in a category all their own...the beauty of the photos from the older sensors has been so underestimated...yes I love my D800 too...but the D300 is my go to camera...put a prime lens on it...go to Lightroom or Elements or Photoshop and enjoy the old mans glory.

I am looking to upgrade/replace my old Nikon D300. Great camera but technology has moved on. I am considering the Nikon D7200, D5500, or D500. I don't think I'm ready to go full frame yet because of the expense and the fact that I have a few DX lenses. Any thoughts or advice? I do mainly landscape and people photography.

I had a D300 for many years and now own a D7200 and D500. Leaving the printed specs and reviews to others, here is what I found.

The D500 feels more like the D300. It focuses and shoots faster than either the 300 or 7200. It also performs better in very low light.
The D7200 is smaller and lighter. It has a respectable shooting and focusing speed, but a much smaller buffer. I do have to wait sometimes.

When not shooting birds I often shoot flowers/weeds. If it is getting dark, with the 7200 I use the built in flash for fill. With the 500 I boost the ISO. I favor the flash.

For the most part I see no difference in image quality.

Um, no. You misunderstood my usage. Not the same thing.

I hope you don't think I'm nitpicking, but you used the words "bigger sensor", when the fact of the matter is that the size of the sensor in the D300 is exactly the same as any DX nikon. The newer models have more megapixels in that same size sensor, so the resolution would be higher.

I gotta say I didn't know what you were talking about either. By your other replies I'd guess you either don't know what you are talking about or you have a problem expressing your opinions.

The D500 is an incredible camera and is the replacement for the D300.

I you go from the D300, which is built like a tank, to the D7200, you will be very disappointed in the build quality, although a fine camera. The D500 is more similar in build quality and a super camera, from everything that I have seen.

I totally agree with you! My D7000 takes better quality photos(especially at high ISO) than my D300, but I like the feel and layout of the 300 more. The 500 seems to build on this and is truly the long awaited replacement for the 300.

The D5500 is an update but is a downgrade.
The D7200 is better in many respects but is a downgrade in built quality.
The only camera considered a real upgrade is the D500.

If you want the smoothest experience go for the d500. Button placement is similar and its the replacement for the d300.

I've had a D300S since it was introduced in 2010. It's a great camera, but eventually I started hankering for an upgrade, too. So I got a new D500 recently: WOW!-- it's a significantly improved version of the D300S. The layout is similar, so the learning curve is shallow, but it's got a number of new features that are awesome: 8.6 more megapixels (20.9 vs 12.3); larger ISO range (100-51,200 vs 200-3200); faster frame rate (10 fps vs 8 fps); higher buffer capacity; improved autofocus; easier back-button focusing; improved battery, and many more. If you love your D300, you'll adore the D500! john marks

Forget the D5500, get either the D7200 or the D500. Consider your needs and buy what you need.
