I am looking to upgrade/replace my old Nikon D300. Great camera but technology has moved on. I am considering the Nikon D7200, D5500, or D500. I don't think I'm ready to go full frame yet because of the expense and the fact that I have a few DX lenses. Any thoughts or advice? I do mainly landscape and people photography.

If you are going to mainly photograph landscape and stills, the d7200 is a great camera, you could save a little by going to the d7100, but that would be your choice. If you shoot action, birds in flight, sports, then go for the d500. in my opinion, it is the best Nikon on the market for a dx camera, and may rival some full frame bodies. personally, I think you would outgrow the d5500, but that is just my opinion.

You can't do much better in DX than the D500, the D7200 would probably be #2.

I do landscapes with a D7200, and am happy with it. The D500 is top of the line, but top price too. The D7200 may be a better buy.

I just upgraded from my D300 to a D7100 and I'm really impressed at how far camera and sensor technology has come in the last decade or so. I looked at the D500 briefly, but the sticker shock put me off. Also, it's a wildlife/sports oriented camera, and I shoot neither - I'm an art/street photographer. The buffer limitation of the 7100 doesn't bother me since I'm a one-at-a-time shooter, so I saved a few bucks by getting the D7100 instead of the D7200 - and then promptly spent the savings and a lot more more on a Sigma Art lens to take advantage of the big sensor. It really showed me what my old 17-55/2.8 was doing poorly! So IMO, unless you're into wildlife or sports, a 7100 or 7200 is tremendous value for money at the moment.

Paul, what do you mean by "big sensor"? All the DX cameras mentioned have the same size sensor!

D500, and get it now while it is on sale and you get a free battery grip, cool.

Paul probably meant that the sensor was packed with a bunch more pixels, bigger quantity maybe? Anyway, my thoughts regarding the original post are the D500 was born for BIF photography (and other fast action subjects). Also, keep in mind the D7200 has substantially larger buffer than the D7100, and the D500 has no popup flash.

If you do primarily landscape and people I'd go with the D7200; if you did fast sports I'd go for the D500.

24 vs 12 mp. That's bigger in my books.

Yes, he probably did mean the number of pixels! Also note that the D500 also lacks a U1,U2 settings. I use those a lot on my D7000. For BIF I have U1 set for a high shutter priority, auto ISO,Center weighted metering and 9 focus points and it gives me great results. If I'm doing a static shot and spot BIF I can just flip the selector to U1 and go at it.

You are confusing # of megapixels with sensor size!

If you don't mind spending the money, the D500 seems like an excellent camera.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

Um, no. You misunderstood my usage. Not the same thing.
