I had something like that YEARS ago, but not the exact same thing. It was a "gimmick" that was supposed to hold an extra roll of film, or something to keep your exposed roll of film in when quickly swapping out rolls. As a wedding photographer, I thought it was pure genius. In practice, I used it once, and got rid of it. If I remember correctly, I got it when ordering a large supply of bulk film once.

There may be another reason for it, but if you look close, I think that loop is closed, so how would you get it around a pipe or tripod.

Only my guess based on what I had. I could be completely wrong. It happened once before, when I thought I was wrong about something, but I wasn't...

If it's a G-lock type, open all the way and slide it up from the bottom...if it's flip lock type, open the strap till released then wrap and tuck the end back in...just guessing.

I could be wrong, just saying that I did have something like that. The only thing that would lead me to another choice is that it looks like it is "adjustable" Mine was fixed, and used elastic. I also had a really stupid bandolier strap on my camera bag to hold film canisters.

It's amazing the kind of "crap" you think will look cool, or serve a purpose. The only purpose that strap had was to help me lose a roll of film every so often.

I have a few articles similar to this. They came with rolling suitcases and functioned by clipping the metal part onto a metal loop built onto the suitcase, then hanging a tote bag onto the "J" portion at the other end. This served the purpose of allowing you to displace the weight of a carry-bag from your shoulder to the suitcase.

Thanks OK, that makes sense. I can see how that would work. None of the other suggestions really fit what I was looking at. I don't know if it's right or not but it makes sense.

It is a key component of a Turbo Encabulator as used on space shuttles and similar pieces of high tech equipment. I am pressed for time right now and can't go into detail but this link explains it clearly and concisely. http://biggeekdad.com/2010/11/turbo-encabulator/ It is short but quite interesting and enlightening.

I should add that it also has civilian and non-military uses and I believe I saw one hanging on the popcorn machine at the local movie theater, but go to the link for a complete explanation.

It's an inter-trans-dimensional stabilizer.
(For when taking photos 'thru there')

No No, those are made from Kevlar with a Titanium core... :), come on you should know that they were upgraded a couple years ago.

I got one of these with a some luggage, but never used it. I think it was to hook over the top of a door so you could hang up your garment bag.

Could be a way to attach a monopod to a camera bag or backpack for easy transport. See if it fits your monopod.

Turbo Encabulators are actually used in nuclear subs to dissipate hydrogen released from an electric oxygen generator fed with seawater while submerged to prevent an enemy searcher finding a trail of bubbles. The name was originally taken from a joke story written by a Ballistic Missile Sub crewman with too much time on his hands. Fantom's link is an apt example of the original story and really quite funny.
