I found this gadget in a bag of photo equipment and I haven't the slightest idea what it is. Does anyone know?

I forgot to put in the dimensions. It's 6 inches long, 2 inches wide and 2 inches high. That hinged half loop part will snap completely closed or open until the corrugated piece is perpendicular to the base. The corrugated piece will unsnap from the loop and remain in the base also.

Looks like a pipe clip...may be part of your tripod to hang it up when not in use or to snap onto your backpack

Thanks for the reply, but if that's what it is, it belongs to someone else's tripod.

I'm going with (as mentioned) a Tripod leg clip, by the looks of the corrugated flex strip it would fit different diameters. Other than than, no clue.

I have seen similar things to this used to clip a bag of rocks to the centre column of a tripod to give extra weight and stability.

That would be my guess, but I wonder how much weight you could attach to that hook. Google was no help. Wow! That is a long link!

Regardless of the original intention, I think jimedge has the right idea. Use it to steady a lightweight tripod by hanging something heavy like a camera bag (or bag of rocks).

When I use weight, I hang off hook supplied, center mass... not off a leg...doesn't mean you can't. Just seems it would hang at a 90° angle to the leg and possibly bending/breaking under weight. For light weight stuff, sure.

Regardless of its intended original purpose, it looks like some kind of quick-release gadget. Such as for getting a piece of equipment it holds attached to (for instance) a camera bag. Figure out how much weight it will hold before using it for anything breakable or that you do not want to lose! Most camera backpacks have loops for attaching things, so you might find a use for it.

Just thought of something, scenario: camera on a tripod, the clip attached to a buckle on a camera strap, the adjustable loop attached to a tripod leg, there by preventing ground contact should the quick release somehow let go of the camera, I.E. Breaking it's fall. I wrap my straps/slings around the tripods leg apex and through the wrist strap of a mono pod for just this reason... Just throwing things out there. More curious than anything.

I had something like that YEARS ago, but not the exact same thing. It was a "gimmick" that was supposed to hold an extra roll of film, or something to keep your exposed roll of film in when quickly swapping out rolls. As a wedding photographer, I thought it was pure genius. In practice, I used it once, and got rid of it. If I remember correctly, I got it when ordering a large supply of bulk film once.

There may be another reason for it, but if you look close, I think that loop is closed, so how would you get it around a pipe or tripod.

Only my guess based on what I had. I could be completely wrong. It happened once before, when I thought I was wrong about something, but I wasn't...
