I don't know where you got that information about Apple and Macs experiencing more problems in recent years but I have not had any problems.
I can't speak to anything about Sierra, because I just upgraded today.

Select the OS you are already familiar with. The brand (PC) does not really matter.

It's the OS baby!

Why this answer? Simply because if you are used to do things a certain way and have to learn a different way it will get in the way of your enjoyment.

New learning curve.

I am looking at getting an updated laptop, or laptop with wider screen. Which one in your option is best - Apple or Dell. I have been using Dell for several years, and wondering if it would be better to purchase Apple for my photo editing. I have never used an Apple, so I am not sure if it is better than Dell, the same, or worse. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I use both systems but more comfortable with Windows. For photo editing - mostly windows. Apple is very stable in my experience and reliable but now with Win 10 I think both systems are equally very good. You will probably find that for Mac computers you will pay more than for PC with the same characteristics. And if you never used Apple before it will take some time before you get comfortable.
So, I don't see a good reason why you should move to Apple (completely new system).

I'm not trying to compare Windows and Mac by my comment, just suggesting that Apple and Macs are experiencing more problems than they used to. For example: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-418779-1.html

All upgrades involve potential problems, and the more mainstream Apple products become - outside the walled garden - the more issues surface. I'm sure they will be resolved over time, but tech is complex. Neither one is perfect. I stay with Windows for many reasons - not a one is better than the other debate - , but also stick with iOS rather than Android. It isn't a brand issue, just personal situation considerations. The playing field is fairly level, and it depends upon preferences.

You might want to wait a week or two, Apple has an event coming up where they are expected to announce major upgrades. All speculation right now but might be worth the wait.

I switched to Mac's for my personal use in 2003 and never looked back. My work computers continued to be PC's except for one old MAC that we preferred to keep our most important work on for many years. The PC's often needed the Tech folks to fix a variety of software issues. Conversely, the Tech people disliked the Mac even though they never had to touch it. When the computers needed to be relocated to another location the MAC was the only piece of equipment that "accidentally fell" off the tech cart.
Also, the local camera store/photo processor I frequented for years used Macs. They did a great job for professionals and amateurs for many years. Find the nearest Apple Store and spend time with a sales person. You'll be amazed.

The specs mean a lot - more than the brand name. I do editing on a desktop and use the laptops for other things. There are lots of advantages to an Apple - like free OS updates when a new version is introduced, although that might be the case with MS now.

I would do a lot of research online, comparing both. New Apple laptops don't seem to let you get inside the case to add memory or install a new drive. I was able to do that with my 2012 MacBook. If you get a machine with good specs, you'll have a good machine. If you get a Dell, there's nothing new to learn.

There are over two million comparisons of Apple & Dell laptops online. Start reading!

PC with Windows seems to have constant problems. Macs "just work." >Alan

I tend to disagree with you, I have been using Windows 10 since they first downloaded it and outside of a couple of oddball software drivers not working at first I have never had a problem with the OS. Driver problems are the norm of updating operating systems and it happens with both Windows and Apple on a regular basis. Bottom line I can do anything on a PC that I can do on an Apple for less money and I can also make it work faster. The other thing I prefer about PC's is they are much easier and A LOT cheaper to upgrade when you want to.

Hi. I switched from Dell PC/Microsoft 6 years ago and I will never go back. I have heard and seen that same sentiment many times on this forum and other forums. I cannot remember ever seeing someone say "I switched from PC/Microsoft to Mac, but I am going back to PC/Microsoft. Apple customer service is outstanding. As far as photo editing software, Affinity is comparable to Lightroom or PSE. As I have said, I have had both, and in my opinion the difference in price is well worth it. I would advise you to go with the Mac. As someone else suggested, go to the Apple store and get a demonstration; have all your questions ready. Good Luck. Ralph.
