I am looking at getting an updated laptop, or laptop with wider screen. Which one in your option is best - Apple or Dell. I have been using Dell for several years, and wondering if it would be better to purchase Apple for my photo editing. I have never used an Apple, so I am not sure if it is better than Dell, the same, or worse. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely, any software you have that you use on your Dell will not work with Apple, so you will also have extra cost buying new software.

See if all of the applications you have will run on an Apple.
(We have Toshiba Satellites, been very pleased.)

Dell is only one of many PC manufacturers that use similar architecture and operating system. Apple is all proprietary and they use an entirely different operating system. Generally, non Apple PC'S are less expensive due to greater competition. Over the years I've owned several different manufacturers PC'S including a couple Dell units. The make I prefer the most is HP.

Select the OS you are already familiar with. The brand (PC) does not really matter.

It's the OS baby!

Why this answer? Simply because if you are used to do things a certain way and have to learn a different way it will get in the way of your enjoyment.

I switched to Apple's iMac 8 or 10 years ago, I also have a MacBook laptop. I would never go back.
While Dell, HP and other computers use Microsoft's Windows operating system, Apple has it's own operating system. It was formally known as OS X, but with the newest version has been renamed macOS.
There are differences in usage between Windows and macOS, but it doesn't take long to get used to them. The differences with regard to Customer Services are like day and night. Apple's Customer Service is so much better than MS's it's amazing.
If you live near an Apple Store I highly recommend that you visit it and have an Apple employee go over everything with you. That is what I did before before I bought my first Mac. They spent all the time I needed (well over an hour) explaining and demonstrating things without pushing me toward a purchase.
If you do decide to buy an Apple computer I suggest you also buy Apples One-To-One. It's $99 a year and renewable. You can use it as many times during the year as you want. With One-To-One you sit down with an employee who goes over with you on whatever subject you need.

For the same price you can get a more powerful and faster computer with a PC like Dell and you will not see any difference in photo applications except that you will probably have a few more choices with a PC.

A Dell XPS-15, which I use for a traveling photography workstation, fully loaded is: $1,699.00 Win 10 Pro, 8 Gb 256 Gb Solid State drive A similarly configured Mac Book Pro is $2,500.00
I have upgraded my XPS-15 to 16 Gb of RAM and added a 1 Tb Solid State drive. The Mac Book is not upgradable.

Macs are excellent computers, but they are typically more expensive than Windows-based machines. The differences between them have changed substantially over the years.

I can't think of a single reason to switch to a Mac. Both systems are pretty equal these days. Macs and Apple are experience more problems in recent years, and Windows 10 is Mr. Softy's best OS ever. Neither is perfect. See the discussions about the latest Mac OS upgrade to Sierra.

The bigger problem is really the learning curve and the software change costs, the devices are no longer that different. It is not dissimilar to Canon / Nikon debate. They both have advantages and disadvantages, but I cannot see anything problematic enough to justify switching from one to another.
