I take pics at gatherings of family and friends and am willing to give anyone who wants one a CD of the pics. I am there as part of the gathering and not expecting to get any pay for the pics.

I am, however formulating a basic simple agreement for anyone who accepts a CD that they will not post any of the pics on Facebook. It is not a matter of money, but a matter of principle. Why should Facebook take possession of pics posted there. And they do that. They can use your pics in any way they choose and it is my understanding you have no say in the matter.

Any thoughts on this?

And, by the way, I do not have and never will have a Facebook account.

I never heard that about FB. Where did the info come from? Glad I don't post any really good pics there. Usually just one of my discards but they have watermarks anyway.

I would like to know how you are going to police your policy? One of the reasons I use a large watermark is because of Facebook and their rule.

I was on for a while with my 2 boys. Was fun talking and sharing with them. But so much crap was going on I shut down my account. Email works just as good. :)

I concur. I set up an account and got replys from poeple I never heard of. The person that wanted to join did not respond as they said they would. I also got a box full of adds that I know that they had sold my address to. Deleted it after about three days. If I wanted to contact you I do not want every one in cyber space to be watching.

Aloha nikonjon,
I have been posting on facebook because I figured my family could see my work since they won't come and see it in person. If what you say is true I'll have almost no reason to keep my account open anymore. If others can confirm this as being true I for one would really appreciate them doing so here in this thread.I will stop posting there for now.
I refuse to post ,print or otherwise share inferior work in my eyes anyway.I share here trusting in other's integrity and believing if I found my work being used somewhere and if that person were on this website I could and would go after them.
I suppose I'am to trusting coming from a generation where people actually earned what they worked for as opposed to stealing from other's.I just lost all my savings because of an unscrupulous lier so this type of behavior is really pi==ing me off!!!
I hope other's here will input what they know on the subject.
Aloha

watermarks are not hard to remove if you have photo shop and photos posted here or anywhere else on the web is not safe if one wants to use them. The best idea that I follow is not put anything that I really want saved on the web.
For the most part you will just be lucky to ever know if your photos or art are used. If they are good and have had a lot of exposure someone may inform you if it is posted elsewhere. But then what can you do unless you spend time and a bit of money to challenge it. usually to no avail.
I have had things put up on website but they have usually credited me with the work. so I can live with that.

It is my understanding, because I set my own privacy conditions, that everything you post belongs to you.If you want or do not want your pictures to be shared,I think there is a setting in "privacy" that covers that.I just googled:"Does Facebook own the pictures you post?" and came away with the above info.I think you should check it out to be sure.

When I shut down me Facebook account my kids and grand kids got all upset. I told them forget Facebook and email if you want to talk to me about something then call me on the telephone and talk to me about something. I would rather hear your voice than read your bad spelling and grammar. No Facebook and very little email; never from the kids or grand kids. Life is sweet

Facebook doesn't "take possession" of pics posted. You give them permission to use the content you post based on how you setup your privacy settings. It does not prevent you from selling and/or using your content as you see fit. When you delete that content, the permission you gave Facebook to use is revoked.

The catch is when you share that content with friends and family. Unless they delete your content, the original terms with Facebook still apply. Of course, a savvy poster will "water down" any content posted beforehand. For example, I share some of my pics with friends, but I only upload a low res version and include a watermark. I think Facebook, like it or not, is a wonderful way to market. I don't think their terms are that unreasonable, but like most IP, you have to take reasonable measures to protect your work.

I have Facebook to I can keep in touch with relatives (one lives over 2,000 miles away) as it is easier than emailing since they never responded to those and fb they do. I also post some of my work but not a lot. If someone wants an image bad enough, they will do what ever it takes to get it no matter what you do.

if the owner of facebook doesn't want to be an american anymore to avoid paying taxes, then i don't want anything to do with him or his company. there is this other technology where you can use it to keep in touch with people, it is called a telephone!
