I drove Rt. 66 from Albuquerque to LA in August 1964 in a 55 ford (no air conditioning). An interesting sight was outside of Flagstaff, where the highway was a burgundy color and the trees were all evergreens. The two colors were very unusual. Naturally the Mojave desert was an interesting sight, but it was just a 2 lane highway (one lane in each direction) and there were warning signs not to leave your car. The highway was built up several feet higher than the desert floor and was probably invisible once you walked just a few feet out onto the sand. I agree the best pics can be those that mean something to you (eg. snapshots of people you met on the road or a nice restaurant you ate at). There was a 7 mile stretch of hill outside of Needles where many cars would overheat several times, trying to get to the top of the hill. If I had a camera I would have gotten a shot of all that. My headlight switch burned out from the heat and we slept in the car in a gas station/diner parking lot in Needles at the edge of the desert. Another shot I would have taken.
