Do you know that Route 66 no longer exists as a single route across the country. It is now a broken series of sections of the original 66. It encounters other much later routes that broke it up. Sometimes when it encounters one of those interruptions, one must travel off route many miles to re-encounter it at another location? It's been that way for decades.

I attempted it many years ago.

A friend of mine attempted the trip about fifteen years ago. He used a medium format Fujifilm GSW690, which I later purchased from him. Here is a link on Pbase called Neon Highways. Not all the images are Route 66, but many are during those times he was able to retrace various segments of the Route.

I live about 50 miles from the image titled Kent Diner. We used to stop there 2-3 times a year to go see my grandparents. Best hamburgers in Oregon, if not the PNW, when they were the only gas for about 25 miles either direction. Nowhere near route 66 BTW!

The best photos are the ones you find along the way. It is what you see, what you think is interesting. Hopefully you find many interesting shots.

I have driven most of the route from Kingman, AZ to Tulsa, OK. The stretch from Kingman to Seligman, AZ is the old Route 66. Other parts are diversions off of I40. You can check my website for my photos @ https://fourcornersinphotos.smugmug.com/Route-66. Take your time and have a fun reliving the "Mother Road".

I live just off RT66 in NM. There is a section of RT66 not far from my house that will play America the Beautiful when you drive on the rumble strip.

Route 66 is very popular in Az. Especially around Seligman and Holbrook. Great photo opportunities. Whenever you get a chance to stop take some photos. You will not be disappointed. Then share what you get.

Coming back from San Diego to Tulsa (2011) we pulled off I-40 onto the old Route 66 into a place called TUCUMCARI. We didn't stop long (didn't have the time) but I wrote in my blog at the time;

If ever a town didn’t want a by-pass then Tucumcari is it. Once a prosperous lay-over on the now defunct R66 the town seems to have fallen on hard times. It died along with the road made famous by the Rolling Stones when the I-40 bypassed it.

But I always thought there was an opportunity there, I just didn't have the time to look for it. Apologies to any Tucumcari residents I may have offended, but that was what I saw on a quick drive through. It may well have changed in the years that have passed since.

There are so many. You do realize the you are traveling backwards. Sometimes that cannot be helped though. In my opinion, the further east you go, the less interesting things become.

If possible, definitely take the old route through Oatman, Az. Beautiful scenery both up and down to Kingman, Az. All through the Mojave desert was interesting to me. Painted desert/Petrified forest. Meteor crater was interesting. The town of Tucumcari, NM is a sight at night. The neon is just a shell of what it once was. Try to stay at the Blue Swallow motel there. Stand on the corner in Winslow, Az. Get a good set of maps. Hard to follow the Route in many places without one. I just downloaded an iPhone app which I would like to try some day. If you've got the time, try to get off the freeway and investigate all the small towns. Sad, but interesting.

Through Oklahoma, Route 66 has been kept in many locations and replaced in other or paralleled. Interstate 44 between OKC and Tulsa replaced or overlapped old Highway 66 but the original highway is there in places. In OKC, North West 39th street is old 66 and there are many establishments still there. Be sure to stop for lunch or dinner at Ann's Chicken Fry on Old 66 (N.W. 39th and Ann Arbor). It's an old hole in the wall (sort of) restaurant that 5 presidents and many celebs and dignitaries have eaten at (including Elvis). The chicken fried steak and fried okra are great but they have many other things. The building is pink in color and has a bunch of old vehicles and memorabilia out in front including an old 1936 Oklahoma Highway Patrol car. Took my wife there for dinner when we were visiting from Philly and she loved it. As others have said, many of the old stores and even the highway it's self has been replaced but Ann's has been there forever. (oh and the prices are decent, even cheap but use cash as they don't take cards or checks). Old 66 from Tulsa to Missouri also parallels I44 and in places it is one and the same. Be careful though as the speed limit is 75 after you get North East of Tulsa and it is all turnpike from OKC to the Missouri boarder.
