I will be taking a photo road trip along Route 66................... your favorite photo ops?
Williams, AZ. It was the last town to be bypassed with Interstate 40. There are many photo ops there.
Eastbound, get off I40 at Exit 161. You will literally drive into Williams on the old road. It is about 6 1/2 hours east of LA.
It is also where you can take the Grand Canyon Railroad to the south rim. Well worth the time. If you are a AAA member they have really good price deals for that trip.

I was born a half block south of Wauponsie, Street in Dwight, IL. This street was also Route 66 back then.

My grandparents lived at 109 East Wauponsie for 64 years, and great grandparents lived directly across the street. The Orr Family were settlers in the 1800s. Dwight celebrated its 100th birthday in 1954. They had the largest parade I have ever seen. I was there, celebrating with family.

Dwight is a small community. Many area farmers retire to Dwight. The only industry there for years is R.R. Donellay, a printing company.

Amarillo’s chamber of commerce (I refuse to capitalize it) and tourism people do a lousy job of promoting 66, but it’s a cool stop. Look for parts of it through town on Amarillo Boulevard. And, for the best part, Sixth Street between Western and Georgia streets. That’s the antique row for town.

Of course, there’s Cadillac Ranch and the Big Texan Steak Ranch. The food there is inconsistent, but it’s a fun stop. Both are on Interstate 40.

if you want to see the great railroad heritage, head downtown to a little park behind the Civic Center to look at the Madame Queen, a massive prototype steamer built for the Santa Fe for heavy freight service.

Last, if you have time, drop south to Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon in the U.S.

As a former New Mexico resident, I will vouch for any stop along the Mother Road.

Be sure and visit Ashford AZ. There is a county museum (http://ashforkrt66museum.com) there that is not impressive from the outside, but great inside. Ashford was the home of the (http://www.legendsofamerica.com/az-ashfork.html) Fred Harvey Escalante Hotel and the museum has a big display about it.

Our tour bus stopped there by accident looking for restrooms and it was one of the hilts of our Las Vegas/Grand Canyon trip.

I envy you. Made the drive in 1955 to attend the Rose Bowl game with a bunch of buddies. Was a wonderful drive. Would love to see whatever of it is still there today. Take lots of pics and share with us when you get back.

Took this trip last year and what a trip it was. Too many stops to name all, but Williams, Arizona was rather lively. Sop in to see Jay Refeather at Open Road Cowboy in Williams if you get the chance.

I drove Route 66 all the way in 1971 from California to visit relatives in Vermont (of course it ended in Illinois.) And then in 2000, my brother and I drove my dad from Missouri back to California, and we were on Route 66 wherever and whenever possible. Deserted and crumbling gas stations, almost deserted towns; it was truly an awesome experience. The other poster was correct in that the further east you go, the less interesting it becomes. Ideally, have enough time to also return on Route 66 and stop again at places that stick in your mind. There are several websites that will show you where to leave the interstate. If you are a member, AAA will also map out your trip for you to maximize your exposure to the old highway. Now that I am retired, it is something I want to do one last time as well, and hopefully I can do that before I die or are too infirm. Take your time, stop everywhere, eat at the diners that are still there and be safe.

You'll have a great time and can follow the mother road under a variety of alignments across all 8 states. When I say alignments, understand that Rte. 66 originated in 1926 and had upgrades/re-alignments throughout it's history. You can still drive portions of the original dirt road alignments, some small segments of (remaining) brick alignments, two-lane concrete and four-lane divided highway portions. Lots of great photo opportunities for landscape, gas stations/petrolina, post-industrial Americana and others.... You'll love it!!! I'd be happy to share some of my favored photo's with you if you wish (just don't want to bore or clutter other folks computers with unwanted photos (I have hundreds of shots from several Journeys between Chicago and Santa Monica). One suggestion, get a copy of the "EZ 66 Guide for Travels" by Jerry McClanahan. It's a "trip-tic" type guide that'll provide you with great step-by-step directions and "must see" sights however, I will say it is far easier to read/follow going East-to West rather than west to east. Also, David Wickliine's "Images of 66" will give you lots of photo's you might want to seek out.
