My biggest complaint with the D800 is you can't text with it.

One of the biggest complaints about DSLRs is that they do not have WiFi and the BIG manufacturers have been incredibly stubborn about implementing it. Canon just recently finally caught on. Nikon? Still waiting.
While I have never bought one I do recall some of the newer Nikon DSLR's having WiFi maybe 2 years ago. Possibly we are talking about apples and oranges here but those cameras were offered and probably still are.

You beat me to it and you are most likely correct.

Nikon has had the WU-1 for a couple years at least.

Actually, I believe she just wanted to see what the photo would look like if she had a Nikon!

Nope. She is covering the event and using the smartphone is the fastest way to post images on the different social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and the like. Why would she be metering when the cameras have a light meter...that's absurd.
Wow! Why would she be metering......... In the immortal words of that cartoon rooster from the 60's and 70's, Foghorn Leghorn, "that's a joke son, that's a joke!"
In the days of long ago, possibly before you were here, photographers had to use a hand-held light meter to get precise metering on a scene. Do you get the joke?

Would make a great advert. for the iPhone. LOL.
Jerry and shaman have it right--she is probably pausing to fire off a post to a friend or to Facebook. No doubt she already has an overload of coverage in her pro (or "serious personal") capacity.
My opinion; a DSLR image would be far superior than most Smartphone Cameras, just in MP count, Focus abilities, Zoom, etc.

I actually do this sort of thing on almost every shoot I go ion. I take images with my smartphone to send immediately in a text to loved ones who cannot be there with me. It is not such an outrageous thing as you make it out to be. My canon has wi-fi capabilities but I don't use them because I prefer to get the pictures home on my computer before sharing any of them.
Also, they now offer WiFi memory cards, I personally have Never had one, so cannot recommend them, but My Nikon D3300 does not have WiFi, so I bought the Wu-1a adapter.
