bottom line... no bureaucrat should be able to weigh another person's health in one hand and assign a price to it.

"I would like to see every young person give 1-3 years of service to the country, so they have some skin in the game." I always love these lines. People choose, or were forced, to enlist and spend 4 years of their lives, sitting in mud somewhere. I spent that time in college and then working 10-14 hour, 6 day weeks, sometime 7, building the foundation for the banks and brokerage firms IT systems in the 70, 80, 90's that support your state side lives today. I never say "You should have went to college and put some skin in the game". Never. Why do all you people do the same to us. It DOES NOT make you better because you did that. I bet I had a better understanding of what I was doing while people sat in rice fields. Most of those kids had no idea what they wanted in life. Still don't. I did. Hell, walk the streets in Brooklyn in the 70's and 80's. Bet you had just as god a chance as being shot and killed.

The VA isn't substandard because of money, but because of bureaucratic over management, and virtually no accountability. your service idea is a good one, with which I have very little disagreement. Crap that happens in the VA system would not be tolerated in regular hospitals

yeah, I went to college, too... not sure what you mean by "you people". I tend to agree with this Jon on this:

Why should the Government profit from Medicare I pay $1300.00 per year and I go twice a year to Doctor for check up that cost Medicare $80.00 per trip.
Dam good deal for the Government.

But you don't know what's around the next corner... If you were diagnosed with cancer or needed by-pass surgery tomorrow you would be singing a different tune. Twenty years of $1,300 payments would be a drop in the bucket compared to your medical costs.

Draft was for 2 years, not 4.
And I went to 2 years of college, then enlisted in the Regular Army to get the GI Bill so I could finish college.
Then went to Cal St University LA to finish a double major bachelor's and do graduate level education to get my credential. At the same time I finished 90% of another bachelor's. So I ended up with the classes for majors in 4 subjects and a teaching credential. While doing that I worked 20-40+ hours a week for a supermarket chain.
Service is a family tradition, there has been at least one who served (some for a career) in every generation on my Dad's side all the way back to the 1600's here and before that in England.
