The military is one option, a CCC equivalent would be great, also Corps of Engineers to rebuild roads, bridges, infrastructure. Doctors could offset their med school bills by serving in Government hospitals (e.g. VA hospitals)
bottom line... no bureaucrat should be able to weigh another person's health in one hand and assign a price to it.

Actually a lot of doctors will not take medicare patients, pay too low, time allowed per patient too short for many things, too much paper work.
The public service for all is an idea I have liked since high school when I read Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". And I like his idea of service is voluntary, BUT, no service, no vote, no running for office, gvt jobs go to the veterans of service first, others second.
They have some programs where student loans are worked off by service now. They need to be expanded. Our youngest is just finishing premed at UCLA and we paid about 90% of it, she got one $500 a quarter "Middle Class Scholarship" and a couple of small loans. Now comes Med School, school for service in a government hospital or clinic sounds fine to my bank account.
When I got my draft notice in 66 I got to tell them "no thanks" I had already signed up for the Regular Army to get the GI Bill. Lived at home, GI Bill and 20-40 hours a week at a supermarket. Then 1 year of no pay student teaching etc and 33+ for the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Doing public service definitely changes people's view of the world, esp in the military.

no, I think health insurance companies are leeches that do not create value in a society, simply deciding who gets what services and taking a 30% cut fr their "expertise".
hehe... luckily I traded him when he was suspended in game 5 of the finals... I got this new stud, Brandon Ingram, in exchange... he's a lot more well-behaved.

Why do you think they shouldn't? It's not guaranteed in the Constitution.

they don't add value to society... their overall effect is to siphon the average citizens paycheck with rising premiums, even as their practices result in higher healthcare costs... the rich and powerful will have access to better healthcare... if you go to a doctor for a visit that costs you $100, $20 is paid directly by you to the doctor when you come in, 50% is paid by the insurance company to the doctor, after he has filed out forms and hassled with their staff. So he gets $60. What happens to the other 40%? 15% goes to deciding who is able to get what medical services, 5% towards making it difficult to file claims and the rest is executive pay and profits.
see the disconnect? If you leave out insurance companies, add in 10% for administration, and the $100 visit would only cost $70.
