I can relate to what you are saying. My first DSLR camera was a Nikon D200 that I fell love with. I then bought a D7000 that never felt as good as the D200. I sold my original D200 and kept the D7000 which I still have. I missed the D200 so much that I bought another one to replace the one I sold. I now have a D200 and D7000. I shoot with each about equally. I get a bit better results from the D7000 in certain rare situations but the D200 still feels better and it does a great job in most situations. If you are satisfied with the results you're getting from the D40X keep shooting with it and enjoying it. One additional benefit for keeping it is that you get to see the additional money in your checking account that wouldn't be there if you buy a new up to date camera that may end up being be no more enjoyable than your D40x.

Okay, I will admit it... I'm still shooting with a Nikon D40X and I absolutely love the thing. It's like an old battle axe. I've never had a single bit of trouble with it and still use the original battery which I just keep recharging. I know there are better, newer, nicer and more expensive Nikons out there, but I just refuse to give the thing up! It's like an old comfortable pair of boots, why change when it still shoots so well. Comments ?

If you have to ask, your problem is much deeper than which camera to use.

Seems like a perfectly logical question to me! On the other hand, your response does seem to hint of a deeper problem for which I would recommend professional help.

In your case, a referral agency might refer you to a middle-aged bald man, just to avoid obfuscation tactics. But, on the other hand, it would, between the two parties needing professional intervention, require analysis to determine if the need might be based on your separate diagnostic levels, i.e., Neurosis. Psychosis, or Sociopathy.

I remember the D40 when it came out. It was a popular affordable camera at the time. The D40X must be an upgrade. Don't feel bad, there are some on this forum who still use film cameras from the 1980s.

It takes great pictures. My first DSLR was a D70s, quickly followed by a D200 which I think had the same sensor as the D40X. Something to be said for CCD sensors - nice color, beautiful grain (unlike CMOS), but it had it's limitations, which I quickly discovered as I pushed the limits of what the camera could do.

So, while there is nothing inherently wrong with keeping and using the D40X, if you want to advance the quality of your images and shoot subject matter that is more challenging, you may find that the newer stuff offers more of what you might need.If you don't care about that, use it until it breaks, then get a newer camera.

I still shoot with my Nikon D50. Of course it's not wrong.

If it does what you need it to do, there is no reason for you to "upgrade".

I have a D40 that was converted to IR, and it works fine. Just because new cameras are introduced, that doesn't mean we have to buy them.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. I converted my old D70 to infrared and my old D300 is still my primary camera. I have a D7000 which is 6 years old now and I just don't see a reason to get anything newer.

TV has never been very important to me. The average guy here has a bigger computer screen than my TV! About 20 years ago we had this little 12" B&W TV with rabbit ears on it that only got three channels.
My wife exclaimed proudly and loudly one night, "boy, I am SOOO glad that all my favorite programs that I like to watch are on those 3 channels that we get!!!! LAUGH OUT LOUD !!!!😂😂😂

SS, funny u should bring up TV. Don't want to hijack this thread, but couldn't help myself. I cut off DirectTv, got a couple of antennas to watch the local channels, stream from Hulu and I'm happy. TV bill now $11.95 a month. Could have been $7.95 but figure I could afford the non commercial streaming. Now I have more money to buy the latest and greatest....NOT.
rpm, Stick with your D40X.

Great pictures are made in the mind. The camera merely records pixels.
