Okay, I will admit it... I'm still shooting with a Nikon D40X and I absolutely love the thing. It's like an old battle axe. I've never had a single bit of trouble with it and still use the original battery which I just keep recharging. I know there are better, newer, nicer and more expensive Nikons out there, but I just refuse to give the thing up! It's like an old comfortable pair of boots, why change when it still shoots so well. Comments ?

No reason to retire the D40. But, unless money is the issue, why not consider an upgrade? It would be advantageous to have more than one body, and you will learn to appreciate the newer, more advanced upgrade.

Ask a completely subjective question and you'll get completely subjective answers. I still have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I absolutely love and that still runs as good as a new one. If I needed to, I could put $5K worth of repairs and a new paint job and, voila, I have a Jeep that STILL runs and looks new....and $5K is much, much less expensive than the $34K being asked today. Moral of the story? Keep your camera and enjoy it! That's my subjective answer and I'm stickin' to it!

I have shelves full of cameras to choose but I think my favorite is still my Canon 1d. It's 15 years old now and has all of 4 mp but those are some megapixels. The only reason I don't travel with it is that the batteries are bigger than most of my cameras.

absolutely no reason to make a change. if you love your device, you will use it and, obviously, you take great pleasure in making images.
good for you!!!

I have said it here several times, my reasons to update are only considered when the camera I use has not some of the features I need to improve on my photography.
The same sensor used in the D40 was the sensor Nikon used in the D70s. Excellent sensor from my point of view because the colors (first generation) were pastel like which is what in my particular case I like.
It is not the best camera for low light shooting, perhaps kind of short in performance for BIF (birds in flight) but otherwise perfectly adequate for general photography especially with good lenses.
If your D40, as I have noticed it in your case is giving you the photographs that please you I would not consider buying another camera. Buy a good lens instead.

Two things:

One, it isn't the gear that makes you a great photographer. The application of light and composition does!!

Two, if you all you ever eat is pancakes, you would never know how good a cheesecake is. If you are a good photographer and are capturing wonderful images that are of gallery quality. You should invest in better equipment. Your work will likely be so much better in print produced by a high-resolution camera with much higher dynamic range.

Good for you!

You are an exception for sure.

As long as your camera is doing what you need it to do why would you go to something else?

SO WHATS WRONG. I still use my D90 with a 18-200 lens when I want to travel light even though I have newer, bulkier higher MP, FF equipment. Especially true if I leave the house without a plan as to what I am shooting that day.

When you do upgrade you won't have to pay street price for new, but can buy "used like new" from the guys who can't resist the latest for 1/3rd the cost and still make a huge leap in specs.

I use a D70 for assignments for a church where I volunteer. For pleasure, I carry a 35mm Nikon or a Bronica 6x6. I have difficulty finding reasons for upgrading in either medium.

If you love using that camera, why would it be considered wrong?

The only ones who would disagree are those who are obsessed with spending money on the latest equipment, or gimmick, thinking that is going to help them improve. If you are thrilled with using the camera and it continues to give you the results you like, keep at it. Hell, all but one of my cameras are at least 40+ years old.

If you love the camera, keep it!

I'm still using a D40, and find little justification to replace it with a newer DSLR model. More focus points, higher ISO options, faster burst rate - I certainly understand why these things are important to some people, but the D40 is perfectly adequate for my approach to photography. When I want to shoot full frame or medium format, I have several film cameras which take care of that. I probably will "upgrade" to a newer camera someday, but perhaps not until after my D40 dies.

I still use my Canon F-1 that I bought in 1970. If it does what you want it to do, no reason to buy the hot new item.
