You two are a gas. Terry, it was Dave who said I must be drunk to use a gimbal on a tripod. Cigars and beer must look the same to you. I have been clean and sober for 27 years. After his rude remark, I answered with a snide remark which you have seen. He then edit out his rude remark to me with a civil response and quoted mine for all to see. I did not quote his. You have jumped on me twice for defending myself after being disrespected. Maybe you could take a long look in the mirror and determine why you think it is OK to jump on someone publicly as you have done. The first time I can understand that you did not know the story but still you judged before having all of the facts. The second time after I laid out the progression and yet you still feel the need to jump on my case. What is your reason to disrespect people on an internet forum?

Apparently you want to keep this going. I don't know what you're reading. That is not what I said. I quoted nothing inappropriate from your posts, you're reading your own post that you entered,so I don't know what quote you are referring to,please point it out to me. The fact that you did not want to edit your response is on you. I carefully explained lag time and your inability to edit your own post in a PM,but I guess that you don't understand that either. Regardless, I'm done.

Okay, I found the quote you are referring to. I was looking for something that contained drunk in it and couldn't find anything. Again,my apologies for the misunderstandings. Too bad you didn't know about the edit function.....

Thank you for your thoughts. Seriously, I never heard of anyone putting a gimbal on a monopod, I'll keep that in mind. My question was pertaining to the use of a 357 assembly on a mono with the ability to tilt for birding. You know,up in the trees or flying...I own and use both tools. It so happens that the same assembly comes on the 393 and I wanted to maintain the interchangeability between the mono and the tripod without changing anything.

The 393 Gimbal was specifically designed for long heavy lenses on a monopod.

I modified mine with an Arca Swiss compatible clamp:

http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/f64.htm

So I leave the 375 plate permanently in the gimbal, and use the Hejnar clamp to attach the lens to the 393. I found that using a lens foot that is arca swiss standard was a far better way to secure the lens on the 393 than the 375, which depends on friction and really torquing down the plate to the lens foot, and still you'll find it gets loose. The Hejnar clamp attaches with 3 bolts, so it is quite secure.

I agree, the 234RC Q2 does not inspire confidence.

Gene, thank you for your reply. I'm on vacation until Saturday so I'll follow up more then. I assume that your'e leaving the 357 plate and not a 375 on the 393,but again, this is out of my realm of any knowledge or experience as to envision how to use this clamp. You're right, I'm not in love with that 357 plate,so I make sure it is tight. Imagmeister recommended a MANFROTTO BOGEN 3063 ADJUSTABLE TRIPOD HEAD,so I've got one of those coming too. I'll get there somehow!

Regards,Dave.

Dyslexia strikes again :)

Yes, I leave the 357 on the 393, then I use the 3 mounting holes to attach the 4" Hejnar clamp.
I don't care for the hexagonal plate used on the 3063 head - and in general, I find the Arca-Swiss easier to work with with regards to standardizing on a single clamp style. Your mileage may vary.

A pic is worth a million....I'll try it and see which I like better.

Believe me, I wasn't being a wise guy on the numbers. My head is full of them. Thought I bought a 3742 Feisol, but it's a 3472!

Thanx again,Gene, I appreciate it!

How do you like your tripod? I have the same one - purchased in 2007 when it was first released. After having used all sorts of tripods through the years, I found this one to be the lightest, most stable AFFORDABLE tripod on the market. I've used only two that were more stable - a Gitzo Carbon Series 5 and an RRS TVC44 but they were heavier - both over 5 lbs - and considerably more expensive. For my use, with a 600mm F4, I decided to get the Feisol and have never looked back.

I haven't used it yet. It was shipped with no base plate. Apparently it's too difficult to send one in a timely fashion,so I'm returning the whole unit for a new one when I get home from Acadia Park on Monday. Go figure.....
