Hello to all! For years I had a Canon AE1 and absolutely loved it. I took many photos with a multitude of lenses. After many years of use it finally quit working. My wife bought me a Canon SX-20 IS a few years ago. I like this camera as it also will do video. I am looking for something similar that will do double duty. I want to upgrade to something nice. I am considering a Canon 70D or the new 80D. Does another manufacturer make something to compare? Suggestions and advice are welcome.
Thank you in advance.

The 70D and 80D are great cameras - till you have to buy and carry the lenses you will need. Maybe the Sony RX10 would be a good fit for you ?

Wow, you likely put a lot of film through that AE-1!

JM, welcome to the Hog!!
Every company is gonna make something that will fill your bill.
Personally, if you don't shoot sports, I would stay with the 70d. The 80 seems to have a much better focus system if your into action but I have not heard the video to have anything really new over the 70. The 70 when it came out had the best video available in a DSLR. It was revolutionary with AF during video and adjustable focus transition times. Both made for cinema-like video.
I would look for a refurbished 70d while you can still get one with an 18-135 STM lens package.
You're gonna get a lot of camera/brand suggestions. Keep in mind that Canon is #1 in the world for a reason!!!
Again, welcome to the Hog. ;-)

If you were to go Nikon, I would recommend the Nikon D7100 with the Nikon 28-300mm lens as your main lens and the Tamron or Nikon 10-24mm for wide angle. Pickup a 50mm f1.8D for low light situations ($134). The 7100 is a crop sensor camera. I have the D7000 and also a D800. For gear that will do a great job without killing your pocketbook, I'd go the crop sensor route. When you get into an fx camera, the lenses get pretty pricey.

I think the D7100 or the D7200 are the best crop cameras available.

Based upon my testing the 80D and how long you keep a camera, you should definitely go for the 80D over the 70D. When you figure how long you keep it and the difference in market value as the cameras age, the 80D will not be significantly more expensive. Having shot film for many years, all I can tell you is once you have the 80D, you will kick yourself for not having bought something like that years ago. I loved darkroom work but Lightroom gives better results in less time.

I was in the same dilemma as you a little over a year ago I too used to shoot an AE1 which dumped and was obsolete I looked around and found a Nikon 7100 (now 7200) with 2 lenses as part of a kit I have never looked back and even enjoy photography more
Remember the camera is a tool..... The picture is in the eye of the beholder
Only you will decide on how to use the tool and which one (lenses) to use

A good choice would be the Nikon D7200 with the 18-140mm or 18-300mm lens.

First welcome. Let me say that I am a Canon shooter since my Canon F-1 in the 70's. That said, there is no such thing a "the best" camera maker. You did not mention money. Among the best crop sensor cameras are the Canon 7D mark 2 or the Nikon D500, but you are lookind at $2,000 with either one and a coupla lenses. Before any choice go to camera store and check out "the feel" of any camera. How the thing fits your hand is very important. Are the controls in the "right" spot. Enjoy the shopping and most of all have fun.

When someone new like you asks that question you can ALWAYS count on Sharpshooter to tout Canon. And then someone will ALWAYS suggest Sony and then there's (DEFINATELY, as SS puts it) a Nikon salesman around. All of this is inevitably followed by a list of reviews by Jerry. LOL My suggestion is that if you had such great success with Canon why not stick with them. It's not like their quality has hit the shitter. They are still one of the best out there.
