I don't know. I think that's perfectly understandable. She's a civilian and they couldn't possibly know better. Most folks are looking at their photos from their P & S cameras and smart phones and then they see one of yours with your tack sharp features, bokeh, ability to zoom and crop, better ISO and low light performance and it's a world apart from theirs. It's natural for them to think you must have a pretty spiffy rig and they are probably correct. By now you probably have a camera with a bigger and better sensor, fast lenses, total control over all the settings, way beyond what they are ever going to have or understand. How many of us when we were starting out thought that by getting a better camera, we could be better photographers and then learned the bitter truth.? All you can do is gently educate.

I can't believe there are 6 pages of this! Say "thank you". That's it. End of story.

I thought I was the most taciturn person in a crowd, but I guess you have me beat. I'm enjoying quite a few of the stories on this thread :-D You can always hit the 'unwatch' button at the top of the first page. :)

Ditto..... and most people do mean well.

Agreed. I think what they really mean implies your photographic skills, but that you do have a good camera because you could not have captured the photo with a simple P&S -- so they're really complimenting you and your equipment.

After my daughter-in-laws college graduation everybody was taking pictures of her with her diploma with their cell phones when, to my surprise, her mother told them to give me some room because I had a "real" camera.

I have found it is of little use to go beyond a comment like that. Take comfort and satisfaction of producing a great image. That is why we do it. If the customer is happy, more the better. Most of the time it's better they don't know. After all, we may want their business again! lol

As they say, if you go to their place for dinner just remember to compliment at the end by saying "that was a great meal - you must have a real good oven!"

The perfect squelch.

Actually, I don't mind this comment at all. In fact, I often find it helpful. A person comes in to my booth, is looking around, and comments, "Nice pictures. You must have a good camera", I'm right there with, "Yes, I'm very happy with it. So tell me, which of these images is you favorite"? (Enter sales mode from there). Same for "What camera do you use"? "Right now, a Canon 5D Mrk ll. I'm very happy with it. So tell me, ..."

My experience is that most people who make the comment, or ask about my equipment, are just trying to make polite conversation and certainly don't intend any insult or slight, so why be bothered. If that gets the conversation going, and gives me an opportunity to talk with them about my work (and possibly make a sale), great. I'll take that any day.

Interestingly enough, it is the "photographer" who comes into my booth and asks what camera I use, and after I tell him comments, "Oh, well I prefer the (fill in make/model here) over that one. It's far superior", that gets me annoyed. (And yes, that has happened on a number of occasions!

I gave a mounted and framed photograph to a co-worker that I took of her husband with 2 of their great grand-kids when they were visiting a few months ago. I do candid portraits of my own grand-kids & have gotten pretty good at it after a lot of trial and error and practice. She loved it and I'm sure she meant no disrespect when she said "that must be a really good camera". Bet I'm not the only one who has been on the recieving end of a 'complement' like this! :) :)

I have a really good set of pots and pans. You wouldn't believe the dinners I can cook in those.
