Good questions. Answer: the latter. I use a Lexar card reader and Lightroom CC usually picks up the card and reads the files. It's worked before with this same card and other cards. Again, the card reads fine in the camera. All the images on the card are there.

If you can connect the camera directly to the computer with a cable and import directly to the computer this way, then It's got to be a bad card reader, or USB port. Sometime USB ports can get flakey and stop registering in the computer. I forgot to ask if you are using CF or SD cards. The pins are easily bent in some card readers for the CF cards. I bent some of them in my computer internal card reader and this is one of the reasons that I bought a Lexar CF/SD USB3 card reader that is UDMA7 compatible.

How long have you used the usb port on the computer and or the reader? There have been times when the contacts get dirty or just plain break down.

If possible, try downloading on another computer to verify if this might be the problem or not.

Goto a local computer store and sweet talk them into trying out a new computer. Sometimes they will do this and sometimes not. The not often comes from a security point of view.

I've taken several pictures (RAW-NEF) with my D750. In trying to bring them into the computer, I get a message telling me I need to format the card. I formatted the card previously. What's going on?

Had that problem with some cards, try a different card reader, my built in in main Photo computer would not read a card, card reader in USB port did, also travel computer would read with built in, all same card, ended up reading in travel computer and wireless transfer to main, no problem. Bob.

Less than we would pay to send a letter to China. Why is that possible?

I have wondered about this for ages... I have bought fossil samples and minerals from China for less than $5, with free shipping. One fossil arrived broken in half, but it would have cost me *way* more than the $5 it cost just to send it back - superglue to the rescue!

I wonder if China has some kind of sponsored shipping for export? Something like that...?

One thing I have noticed is that when I format a card in the camera, the images remain. That might suggest there's something wrong with the camera, yes? no?

You may be formatting the other card in the camera. Suggest you do a few tests one card at a time and see it both cards have the problem. Is your LR up to date d750 is recent camera. If so and both cards have the same problem it might be the card reader.

I tried about every combination and it's the card reader, which is a 5 year old device not designed to read the new high-capacity cards. I confirmed this with the mfr. Thanks for your input!

I never take my card out of the camera, I always use the USB lead provided. It seems that Nikon cameras often have problems with transferring photos to a PC.

This subject comes up here regularly, and by far the greater number of problems involve the use of a card reader, regardless of which camera. One seldom hears of problems with a USB cable.

What operating system do have? When I started using the more advanced Sd cards and was using XP I needed to load a free program from Windows. Things worked good after that. Newer windows should have that program installed already.

I'm using Win 7. No problem with smaller (32GB) cards.

Glad you solved it. I burn through these card readers a lot, especially when traveling. They are not very durable and I am not very gentile. If replacing it, get the fasted one your computer can handle. I have one with a Thunderbolt drive speed and it makes downloading a lot faster.

cheers

You said something interesting, that after formatting your card, the images still remained on the card. I'm wondering how that could be, unless there is something wrong with the camera's formatting system. Once a card is formatted, all the image data is removed, so there shouldn't be anything left on the card to appear.

In my experience the card has failed. Time to replace it.

This discussion brings up a question I've had for a long time. I read where a lot of folks either use a card reader or load images to their computer directly from their camera using the USB cable. I have just been inserting the SD card directly into the computer and loading the images that way. Should I be using one of the previous methods, or is what I'm doing just fine?

Nothing wrong with what you are doing if it works for you. Not all computers have built in readers. It also depends on the age of the reader. Tech ages and evolves, so newer cards may not work in older readers which appears to be the problem here. For large cards, USB 3.0 is much faster if your computer supports it.
