I've taken several pictures (RAW-NEF) with my D750. In trying to bring them into the computer, I get a message telling me I need to format the card. I formatted the card previously. What's going on?

It's a SANDISK extreme pro 64GB.

I should repeat that the card's images appear fine in the camera.

What method are you using to bring them into your computer? Are you connecting a cable to the camera, turning camera on, then using what software to download?

Or are you removing the card from camera, plugging it into a card reader and then downloading (importing)?

What software are you using? Did you try another card to see if it works?

Good questions. Answer: the latter. I use a Lexar card reader and Lightroom CC usually picks up the card and reads the files. It's worked before with this same card and other cards. Again, the card reads fine in the camera. All the images on the card are there.

One thing I have noticed is that when I format a card in the camera, the images remain. That might suggest there's something wrong with the camera, yes? no?

Is the card locked?

No. Both (identical) cards in the camera are unlocked. Would I have been able to record images if the card had been locked?

Can you download the images directly from the camera so that you don't risk losing any work?

After that I would try reformatting the card in the camera and see if it fixes the problem

If not reformat the card with the computer and see what happens.

Also rebooting the computer wouldn't do any harm

Good luck

Yes. I downloaded directly from the camera with no problem. Looks like a possible WINDOWS problem.

I formatted the empty card in WINDOWS. It still works in camera. Perhaps the camera's formatting system isn't functioning properly.

Some older card readers can't handle 64G cards.

You mentioned two identical cards.
Do they both behave the same?
Are they really identical?

Yes. They produce the same results when exchanged.
